Pattaya, first WTA tour event to use new doubles format
The US$170,000 Pattaya Women’s Open, which is being held at the Dusit Resort, Pattaya from 3 – 11 February, will be the first Sony Ericsson WTA tour event to test out a new doubles format for professional women’s tennis tournaments.
The new format which is similar to that used on the ATP men’s tour is designed to shorten the length of doubles matches and make them more interesting for spectators.
The key changes involve the third set being replaced by a super tie-break if the scores are level at one set each and dispensing with ad scoring, so that when the score in a game reaches deuce, the next point decides the winner of the game.
In addition to changing the doubles format, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has dispensed with doubles qualifying at all tour events.
The entry list at Pattaya includes 5 players ranked in the top 30 in doubles including Olympic champion Sun Tiantian, Sania Mirza, Maria Kirilenko, Marian Bartoli, and Gisella Dulko.
The Pattaya Women’s Open qualifying rounds will take place on Saturday 3 February and Sunday 4 February, when admission is free. Tickets for the 5 – 8 February are priced at 300 baht and for the final 3 days from 9 – 11 February, the tickets are priced at 300, 500 and 1,000 baht.
