It's remarkable how high Serena is ranked for how little she plays. She's been a top ten player for three years now, and she's never come close to 18 tournaments.

It's called "North American Hard Courts." Big titles, lots of points, friendly surface...

And good scheduling.

Smart, smart girl, that Serena is.

I don't even have to look at head-to-head to say Serena will take the title... she is hungry again (after 1.5 year draught)

The thing about these win-loss stats is that although it is indeed fair to say (as all Serena fans do...) that she has lost to very few players, it is equally true that she has won very few matches against top players.

She's lost to Venus, Martina, Jen, & Monica
She's beaten Davenport, Clijsters, Henin & Hingis

Fact of the matter is that there isn't enough to go on here. She's played so few tournaments that it's become very difficult to tell exactly what her abilities are.

I'm not trying to say that she won't win the Australian Open, but that these stats aren't enough to base a prediction of any kind on.

There are really only 3 players that Serena has has problems with. Venus, Capriati, and Hingis. Serena is very inexperienced. Her lack of play has stunted her development imo. After Toronto, Serena actually began to reap benefits for paying her dues. Venus had many tough losses to Lindsay and Martina before she became the player she is today. Serena had her tough matches this summer. Serena is now playing with more confidence and patience than she ever has. Look for her to continue this growth in 2002.
