In eastern slavic languages you have an apostrophe which is a softener. E.g. L'viv
Check it out in wiki cause I'm not very good explainer.

As far as I know, the apostrophe is sometimes used in Cyrillic to Western transcriptions as replacement for 'ь', which is indeed a softener.In eastern slavic languages you have an apostrophe which is a softener. E.g. L'viv
