I am also surprised that Rennee got a nomination, she is the most surprised nominees in the whole list, which is surprising coz many people thought this year is the most open. But nice to see Gosford Park get a nod, anyone seen it? is it any good? How about In the Bedroom? looking forward to see the critics on those film.

I'm extremely unhappy, although not surprised, that Memento only got 2 nominations. IMO both Guy Pearce and Carrie-Anne Moss deserved a nomination and yet again the Academy overlooked the best in their respective fields.

Memento was by far the best film of 2001 and i think this "fact" should have been represented in the nominations. C'mon, even Ethan Hawke got a nomination :fiery:

Did anyone see Halle Berry in Monsters Ball?

Shoot imho Halley blows this competiton away.. if you haven't seen the film then go see it.:) Halley puts on a wonderful performance.

By the way the Academy is racist, and Halley won't win. Which also explains why the film didn't get nominated. Blah ever since they snubbed the (color purple) for being to real I have never watched the Acadmey , it's just too white americanized for my tatse. I prefer the Cannes film festival myself.

One more thing.. Europeans make alot better films then the Americans.. imho.

Great list, no surprises. Since there were only about 8 good films to choose from this year...

The Best Picture nominees are perfect.

The only surprises are Ethan Hawke, who shocked me, and Renee Zellweger, who had an outside shot. Kudos to them both.

My only complaints are Sean Penn at the expense of Gene Hackman, and Tilda Swinton not getting in the Best Actress list (I would personally boot Kidman for "Moulin Rouge," but she deserves a nomination for "The Others" so...).

Really good choices this year, I'm pleased for once. :D

I haven't seen all the nominated performances yet so I will reserve judgment, but I hear Sissy Spacek is incredible in her role. Both Sissy and Judi Dench are brilliant actresses and I can't imagine either one being blown away by many other actresses, let alone by Halle Berry. BUT, I will wait 'til I see Monster's Ball -- Halle may just surprise me.

Halle was great. I think Sissy was just a touch better, but I would be totally pleased with a Halle victory. No black woman has won the Best Actress award, and Sissy already has an Oscar on her mantle. So though I think Sissy gave a incredible performance, I would vote for Halle.

But the Academy clearly likes "In the Bedroom" more than "Monster's Ball" (for good reason; "Monster's Ball" wasn't nearly as good).

It's a very tight race between Halle and Sissy.

I like both actresses :) Halle and Sissy, if maybe both recieve the prize ...

Isn't Whoopi Goldberg which will present the Oscar this year? She said that she would never present again....

Is this true or not????

It's a nice list, though, I must admit, I really have a total personal distaste for Will Smith. Urgh! I'd hope they would pass him over. His life is too damn perfect, and he has made SO many shitty movies. Oh, well.

Spacek has won all the major pre-Oscar awards, so I think it's a given she will win, though I thought Halle Berry was great in Monster's Ball, I personally hope she wins, though I doubt she will as the film did poorly nominations-wise. But the Best Actress Winner often comes from a movie with few nominations. We'll have to see on Oscar night. Will Berry break the Dianne Carroll, Cicely Tison, Diana Ross, Angela Bassett, Whoopi Goldberg "curse"? We will have to see. I thought Ross had the best chance of them all, but she ran into Liza Minelli in Cabaret. If Lady Sings the Blues had come out in '73, Ross would have won.

MONSTER'S BALL
THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS
Best Actor- Denzel Washington. He is way overdue. If Malcolm X had come out any other year besides 93, Denzel would have won. Unfortunately, the academy favored Pacino that year.

Potential Upset: Russell Crowe could pull a Hanks and win another Oscar

Best Actor in a Supporting Role- Jon Voight. He's Hollywood royalty and had the most critically acclaimed role in Ali.

Potential Upset: Ben Kingsley. In Sexy Beast, he finally shed his Gandhi aura and played a nasty villian. Hollywood loves actors who play against type.

Best Actress- Judi Dench. She's a revered theater and film actress and many felt she should have won for Mrs. Brown several years ago.

Potential Upset- Halle Berry (My dream pick). She played against type in Monster's Ball and proved that she was more than a beautiful face and body.

Best Supporting Actress- Jennifer Connelly. She was wonderful as the supporting wife to Russell Crowe's character. Ditto my comments on Halle Berry.

Potential Upset-Kate Winslet. Continues to prove that she is a much more diverse actress than her part in Titanic demonstrated.

Animated Feature Film- Monsters Inc. Wonderful, funny, touching film.

Potential Upset- Shrek. Given the hype around Shrek, I would be shocked if it didn't win.

Directing- Ron Howard. Howard directed a wonderful film and his work is a showcase of true skill as a director. The fact that he is Hollywood royalty is a plus.

Potential Upsets- Robert Altman. One of the great maverick directors of Hollywood. His work is too great and complex to keep ignoring. Peter Jackson. The sheer scope of his work in directing three films at the same time.

Best Picture- A Beautiful Mind. Hollywood is looking to honor Ron Howard and I feel this Oscars will be it.

Potential Upset- Gosford Park. A small ensemble piece with over 20 speaking parts that is handled with great touch by Altman. If Altman doesn't win for best director, this film may clinch an award for him.

Writing (adapted): Lord of the Rings. Translating Tolkein's work into a three hour critically acclaimed movie and box office hit deserves some sort of recognition and I think this may be the biggest award that this movie takes home on Oscar night.

Potential Upset- A Beautiful Mind.

Writing (Original)- Memento. For its sheer originality.

Potential Upset- Monster's Ball. For tackling interracial romance in the South.
