There's a good chance for some players to get to the quarterfinals at the Us Open.

The first quarter consists of Alicia Molik, Paola Suarez, Fabiola Zuluaga, and Elena Likhovtseva.
Suarez is the seed here, but Molik, Zuluaga and Elena have all been having a good year. All are in the top 50, with Molik being ranked the lowest at 44, Elena 36, Zuluaga 37.
None of these four have ever been in the quarterfinals at the Us Open, with Elena having gone the farthest with a 4th round on a couple occasions. Molik and Suarez have never been past the 3rd round, and Zuluaga has never been past the 2nd round until now.

The winner of this quarter will most likely see Lindsay Davenport, but if Lindsay's not in top health could we have a first time semifinalist?

The next open quarter consists of Ai Sugiyama, Nicole Pratt, Francesca Schiavone, and Tina Pisnik. Ai, seeded 15, seems to be the favorite, but with a poor head to head record against Nicole she could be in trouble. Francesca looks steady so far this summer, and as the 29th seed could be the surprise quarterfinalist. Tina is a wonderful player when she is on, and could pull the surprise, though. Francesca has made it the farthest of this group at the US Open, as she has 4th round points to defend from last year. Ai, surprisingly, has never made it past the 3rd round here, the only grandslam that she hasn't been innthe 4th round at.

The winner of this quarter will probably face Jennifer Capriati, or possibly Elena Dementiava.

The final open quarter has more top players. Myskina, Sanchez-Lorenzo, Mary Pierce, and Shinobu Asagoe are the players vying for the quarterfinals. On paper Myskina would be the obvious favorite, seeing as she's top ten and seeded 7th. But Myskina struggled past Antonella Serra Zanetti in round 2. So if not Myskina then Pierce, right? Right now it would appear good for Mary, but is she fit enough to come back after the three set battle she had with Dokic to beat Asagoe? Shinobu has been having an excellent year, but can she handle Mary's power and expierence? Mary has been a semifinalist here before, while none of the others have been past the third round. But wait, aren't we forgetting someone? Sanchez-Lorenzo, believe it or not, is ranked higher than both Shinobu and Mary. Could she pose a threat for that quarterfinal spot?
Expect Myskina to pass through to the 4th round, but expect the winner of Pierce/Asagoe to be the favorite for the quarterfinals.

The winner of this quarter will most likely face Justine Henin. Some believe that Pierce could pull the upset on Henin, but it seems unlikely. If Henin were to faulter and not advance to the quarterfinals, we'd be seeing a surprise semi-finalist, as Henin's quarter has Safina, Schaul, and Obata in it.

Sure she's a potential thread, she's full of talent but almost never gets to fulfill it, maybe THIS is her GS:bounce:
