Pennetta didn't keep the ball deep enough, and above all didn't return serve deep enough, and gave Ludmila a ton of balls to swing away at - which Ludmila duly did as she was going after the ball with gusto. Ludmila blatantly tanked the last couple of return games in the first, and Pennetta didn't trouble Ludmila on return at all up until that final multiple deuce game.

Ludmila's racquethead speed in some of her groundstrokes was astonishing - unusually, she often aimed those rockets nowhere near the lines, and still Pennetta couldn't do a thing but watch them whizz past her. Also, some of Ludmila's play to go up 5-0 in the second was - touch volleys, rocket CC BHs, the works.
