I've never heard of any of those.
That's okay, everyone has to start somewhere.

You probably heard about Monopoly or Risk. The former coined very negative stereotype of this hobby, which is sustained by popularity of this god awful product. Monopoly is a game that should be buried in the darkest corner of rotten cellar of provincial museum (no offense to provincial museums).
Scrabble will do just fine.
Sure, if you're an avid fan of word games.
Terraforming Mars is basically advanced Catan. Wingspan is about collecting birds, but it's really complicated - reading the instruction booklet made my head hurt. It depends whether Iga would want to learn all these games or not, and if she can find enough people to play them.
Hmm, I agree that Wingspan may be problematic for someone who is totally new in this hobby, unless one plays with someone who already knows this game. 7 Wonders seems like a much better option, especially Duel version (I suppose Iga plays mostly with Daria).
I must be really old (well, I am!) because I've never heard of that one either.
That's understandable if you've never been interested in this form of entertainment.
Wow did this discussion get derailed by tabletop games.
I requested moving this discussion to OT thread.
Anyway, let's derail it even more - comparing Scrabble, a game where to do well you are required to have vast lexical resouces, aka. definitely not something you can "learn by practice" to Catan or Agricola or any of the games where to do well you have to master strategies exclusive to that game alone and nothing else is... not very accurate. To say the least.
I'm not sure if I get you correctly but... Are you suggesting other games are lame, because you don't need expanded vocabulary to play them? Different games require different set of skills. And you can easily pick a game perfectly matched to your liking - there are hundreds of really good products. I personally avoid basic stuff like Catan. I'm on a different level. Here's little story: when I introduced board games to my niece, she had known only few playing card games. So we started with Forbidden Island - cooperative game with very simple rules. After few plays it became boring, so I introduced her to Robinson Crusoe - hardcore, scenario based survival co-op game. I know this game very well, so rules weren't a problem at all. I also took care about creating proper atmosphere. She's so into this theme and game, that we've never gone back to Forbidden Island.

Anyway it's good to have someone who is an advanced gamer. From what I saw on Instagram, Daria uses tabletop games more like tools which help to relax, not something that's pure entertainment in the first place.
Scrabble could actually be pretty good for her English, since you need to know a lot of words to do well.
True, but knowing Iga she plays Polish version only and doesn't want to play English one.
