What?! Lorena McKennitt is Canadian? I always thought she was Irish based on her music. I love her music too. She has an incredible voice.
LM is of Celtic heritage, as are many Canucks. My mother was a war bride from London, whereas my paternal grandmother emigrated from Wick in northern Scotland. Sadly, though, I can't sing worth a darn...

I’m amazed at how many great musicians that I love come from Canada: Heather Nova, Celine Dion, Lorena Mckennit. What is it about Canada? 😊
Ok. Three more to the list. Listening to McKinnett now on your recommendation. it seems in the 70s there was a Canadian invasion into the US. Not sure anymore, artistic expression isn't as popular anymore perhaps.

Oh I see. Is there not a vote in the House to confirm them as leader of parliament?
No, but there can be a vote of confidence in the House that can throw them out of office - it happens quite a bit if it's a minority government. I remember being in Florida one December when an alarmed American informed us that there had been a coup d'etat in Ottawa with Joe Clark being 'overthrown'. All it was was a failed vote of confidence and a call for a new election. He thought it was tantamount to a revolution!

This is Rollingstone's tribute to what they consider the 50 most noteworthy Canadian musical artists - a mix of the oldies-but-goodies plus more up-to-date examples. It's clearly not just a 70s phenom.

Very different how the President gets elected here- its a countrywide vote. But the nature of selection of party presidential candidates mean each party select an extremist, and mainstream folks like me are left with a selection between bad and worse. I thought that was what @eraddict was getting at, but i don't see how that is similar to the UK.
We have the same parliamentary system as UK, with the leader of the majority being the prime minister. But somehow in Canada we ended up with 3 major parties, one left (NDP), one right (PC) and one center (Liberals) at least theoretically. Prior to Trudeau, we had a PC government, with NDP as main opposition because the liberal party lost a lot of seats to NDP. Trudeau grabbed those seats back and stayed in power by moving liberal party ideology to the left, to the point that the PC became the only party with a decently balanced centrist ideology. BTW PC is in many respects closer to Clinton Democrats than Bush Republicans. Mark Carney took advantage of the Trump crisis to move the liberal party back to the center. I am a PC voter, but I am not unhappy that liberals won. With their current ideology it was almost a coin-flip between them and PC for me. And I am really happy that they returned to a healthy center, and thus restored Canadian politics to a healthier balance.

Even with 3 parties, I feel my options are limited. Each party has policies that I like and others that I dislike. I wish I could vote for individual policies instead of parties. I cannot stand the woke ideologies promoted by NDP (similar to the ones descried by @cricketbat), but I would love to see some of their anti poverty measures implemented. I feel ashamed that in our very rich country we have people living on the streets and kids leaving in poverty. I feel sad that Canadian kids do not have access to good free education as I had in a very poor Communist country, and that is not a problem with lack of money but mostly with stupid woke policies. Still, having 3 parties to chose from is better than just 2.

Joni at #1 ahead of NY. Coincidentally we were watching the Seoul Final tonight and I was thinking Alexandrova at times reminds me of Joni Mitchell. Life is all tied together, lol. k.d. lang is Canadian, I guess I forgot.
