275: Film Noir

song: Crime Scene Part One
artist: The Afghan Whigs
album: Black Love
year: 1996

When The Afghan Whigs signed their major label deal, frontman Greg Dulli had a clause written in that he could make a movie à la Prince. Things happened so that movie never came to fruition. But Dulli has always had a cinematic view for his music and The Whigs 1996 album Black Love is an aural film. The genre of film it fits into is certainly film noir. I had no choice but to take a song off that album. I chose track one. For me this beginning is better than most movies for setting the scene. And to bring another medium in, when the lyrics come in, they are better than the beginnings of most novels.

Film noir requires three things: a city, darkside of human nature, and the femme fatale.

The City: the sound of the train entering the station followed by the Dulli's sauntering guitar "bathe my path in shining light/set the dials to thrill me"

Darkside of human nature: Dulli's career is resides here. "Every secret has it's price/this one's set to kill"

femme fatale: as this is the lead track on the album it is not obvious in this song, but the lyric "a lie, the truth/which one should I use?" are used again on track 4 of Black Love. That song starts with the lyric "My lust it ties me up in chains/my skin catches fire at the mention of you name." The femme fatale has very much been established. Track one knows she will be there and tellingly the "should" in the opening scene has changed to "shall" for track 4.

Greg Dulli has always been a polarizing figure, so tying for most first place votes yet finishing outside the top 10 wasn't a surprise.

276: Dance

song: Push Upstairs
artist: Underworld
album: Beaucoup Fish
year: 1999

I don't dance.

But T. Rex and some latin jazz makes me want to. T. Rex's Bang a Gong had already been used and I couldn't think of any latin music easily. But I really like Underworld. Easily my favourite elctronic/dance group.

279: In Harmony

song: Sorry Wrong Number
artist: Doughboys
album: Happy Accidents
year: 1990

Songs with harmonies has always been something I've liked. I even have a pet peeve with bands where the singer just records the harmonies with themself, seriously, nobody else in the band has passable vocals? Doughboys are a band that for me blasted through the shoulder slumping grunge era of the early nineties, and their harmonies were a big draw for me. At the time a friend of mine (a Nirvana and Green Day fan) said he'd "like them better if they didn't sing so much." So, considering every one of their songs over 5 albums and an ep has harmonies, it was a chore deciding which one to use. I eliminated anything from their last album in 1996 due to the lead guitarist leaving the band late in the recordings and the band getting rid of his vocal parts. So, when there is a third vocal it's one of the other two doing it. Like I said a pet peeve. I chose this one because there is harmonies on almost every word sung.

song: Nanoman
band: Voïvod
album: Negatron
year: 1995

Metal is generally a genre I don't like. Tool, Deftones sure. Slayer, Metallica not really. Well, I do like "Hero of the Day" by Metallica. :p But for some reason I do like Voïvod, even their heavier stuff.

song: Autodidact
artist: Swervedriver
album: I Wasn't Born To Lose You

First thought when I saw what the theme for the game would be, this is what popped into my head (maybe a Pavlov's dog thing.) There are quite a few Swervedriver songs I could have used but stuck with this one.

Disappointed with the final placing. Thought it'd be middle of the pack, and with a 6th place semi-final placing it looked like that would happen...

Always been a fan of Blondie. Have been listening to this song more recently, and liking Clem Burke's drumming. (I also, tried to vulture the game with a popular artist. :eek:h:)

Another drop from a semi-final 1st place. And got held off the podium by two songs from the same boring band, called Kino. Duran Duran and Stereolab took the top 2 places.

284: Balletomane

song: Cruel Mistress
artist: Clint Mansell
album: Black Swan Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
year: 2011

Songs for ballet?
My first choice was "Runaway" by Kanye - but it had already been used previously. Then I thought "Helena" by My Chemical Romance. I watched the video and the girl was wearing ballet shoes but even my neophyte eyes could see she might not actually be a ballet dancer. Did some research and yep, she was a burlesque dancer. Could have said "fuck it," and used it anyhow, but I continued searching. I seem to recall Def Leppard's "Hysteria" video had some ballet, but no it's ballroom dancing. I really liked the movie Black Swan with Natalie Portman (and not just because of her wet dream with Mila "was I good?" Kunis,) and figured I probably could find something I liked on the soundtrack.
Even though he was the one who picked the category, I wasn't even considering Sam L's Portman fandom.

Artist from Oceania? Outside of Australia, I basically know of 2 or 3 - all New Zealand. I went for one my favourite lesser known Aussie bands, but they are the most successful independent Australian band.

286: Funeral & Mourning

song: Good Day
artist: Paul Westerberg
album: Eventually
year: 1996

In 1978, 18 year old Bob Stinson after getting released from a group home for troubled youth with the intent of forming a band to fix his life. He saw his 12 year old half-brother Tommy Stinson going down a similar path, so with pop and chocolate bars coerced Tommy to play the bass. Chris Mars joined on drums. The band went through singers, one such dismissed singer was Paul Westerberg, who Bob thought his songs were too punk. But Paul would not be dissuaded and got back in. A power struggle would result between the founder and the songwriter of this band: The Replacements.

By 1985 and the band's major label debut, Tim, Bob's drug issues were beginning to become too much of a problem. After their drunken Saturday Night Live performance in early 1986 and Bob's subsequent trashing of his hotel room, he was fired from the band he founded.

February 18, 1995 Bob Stinson was found dead of a suspected heroin overdose, but the coroner's report would say organ failure. At the age of 35, Bob Stinson died of natural causes.

Paul wrote "Good Day" for Bob.

287: Previously Un-nominated vol. 6

song: Even Tho
artist: Joseph Arthur
album: Our Shadows Will Remain
year: 2004

Not surprised Joseph Arthur had not been nominated before.

Originally from Akron, Ohio and signed by Peter Gabriel in the mid-90's. Has played with Greg Dulli's Twilight Singers, and fronted bands such as Fistful of Mercy w/Dhanni Harrison & Ben Harper, RNDM w/Jeff Ament, and Arthur Buck w/Peter Buck, amidst his many solo albums.

I don't listen to everything he puts out, but I picked him because he had recently reentered my conscious when I found he has started a podcast which I came across on YouTube and he has a new album coming out soon.

289: Scrabble's Most Wanted

Songs titles beginning with J, Q, X or Z

song: Zeroes and Ones
artist: Jesus Jones
album: Perverse
year: 1993

After the success of Jesus Jones' previous album Doubt, with two top ten hits in the USA, and whose biggest hit was all about it's time (Right Here, Right Now,) the band set about looking to the future, by recording almost exclusively digital, "to turn music into zeroes and ones." At the time the band took flack for this, but of course it has since become the norm. For the CD single both The Prodigy and Aphex Twin did remixes.

Across the world the message flies, information, truth and lies
It's all yours and it's all mine, you just have to find the time
We're all the same, we share the blame, we play the games
If it's yes or no the decision is easy, it's easy

Zeros and ones will take us there

This time the revolution will be computerized
You'll know it as you do it in real time before your eyes
Slip between realities
There's more to this than anything that you or I can see
The world is mine the world is yours and here's the cause

Zeros and ones will take us there

I've stared into the heart of it all
Seen the pictures on the wall
The beat of a heart
The oceans part and the patterns in my mind

This time, we've split the world once more
There's those that have and that don't in information wars
We're not alone 'cause all is known and it's everywhere
It's everywhere

Zeros and ones will take us there

291: The Parent Trap

song: You Got It
artist: Roy Orbison
album: Mystery Girl
year: 1989

From my Dad's record collection there were many, too many options to choose from: Motown, Otis Redding, Tommy Roe, Rolling Stones, CCR etc. My Mom's record collection had only one option, Sure she had more than that one record. Lots of Christian bluegrass records, piano stuff like Frank Mills. All very uncool stuff. But there was that one record: Roy Orbison's Mystery Girl.
