To all Hingis fans, I can assure you that Jen-Cap fans, such as myself, are not celebrating Martina's injury. It is a sad end to what has already been a bad year for her.
I do feel that despite Jennifer's loss to Testud, she deserves to be no. 1. She has played incredibly well all year on every surface
Oz Open- Champion
French Open-Champion
Wimbledon- semfinalist
UsOpen-semifinalist.
Tier 1 events
Ericsson-finalist
Family Circle Cup-champion
German Open-finalist
Canadian Cup-finalist
she has also made the semifinals and quarterfinals of other events.
Hingis, on the other hand, has slumped since February. She has not made the final of a slam since the Oz and has not made the final of a tier 1 event this year. Her slump is quite bad for a no. 1 player. This injury comes at a crucial time for her, but perhaps it is a blessing in disguise. Martina plays week after week and she may really need a break to get back into game.
This number 1 ranking has become a moot point over the last two years with more players competing for the big titles-slams and tier 1 events- rather than worrying about their ranking.
Martina will be back next year and so will Jennifer. Hopefully we tennis fans will get to see many more amazing tennis from these two.
