Martina hingis fell and sprained her ankle having to withdraw from her match against Lindsay...So in the saddest of circumstances Capriati takes over the number 1 spot. I'm sure neither Jenny or her fans feel this is the right way for it to happen, but tennis is tennis annd she is now number 1.

Well Jennifer had a great year so she deserves to be #1 even though she hasn't been that impressive after Wimbledon.

Sad for Martina to lose her ranking like this but I hope it will motivate her to get back to her best form.
Get well soon Marti!

Congrats to Jennifer!

It's like I said in another thread:

Also Cap is #1 because she worked hard all year long, there was no guarantee that Martina would even win since she has not win anything in 8 months and not beaten a top ten player except Tauziat in almost the same time. So I'm sorry she fell but Jennifer earned the privelege of being number 1 through 9 months of hard work not 1 fell from Martina!

2 Grand slams, 2 Semis
1 Tier 1
Countless Finals

She was very consistent this year beside Venus no one else deserve to be #1 more.

Congratulations to Jennifer Capriati. She deserves to be the #1, because she has worked hard for it. It was certainly not a good way of getting it. Hingis' default is not the way you want it to happen. The ideal way would be winning a match and getting it, like in a Grand Slam final!

Adrain, you are right. It´s really sad that the change in the rankings happens that way.
But we must admit that this is only one of many reasons why Martina lost position1.
So Martina´s fall is bad for her, for the tournament and for everyone who loves tennis. But Capriati played much better the whole year and she deserves being #1.
Martina had probably lost this match, even if she had played- and even if she had won, Martina would have lost her position next week.
The main point is that Martina is able to play soon again.

I'm not sad that Jen is number 1, just sad they way it came about....

I wa confident that Martina would of Beaten Lindsay, Lindsay strugled to break Martina, Martina broke her with ease, it was the beginning of a great match, cruelly ended.

Victory1's comments are a deep seated jeolously that his favorite is not in the ball park.....

Martina probably would've lost to Lindsay anyway, she would've lost the #1 by the year end if not now. Jennifer is totally deserving of the #1 ranking and so is Venus ahead of Martina so I say *HOORAY* that she's lost it! Eventually the rankings are reflecting something true, that Jennifer is #1, not Martina!

It is unfortunate that Martina had to withdraw and therefore lose the #1 ranking in that way but face it, that's life!

what a shame
especially with jen losing in the quarters

i'm quite sure it isn't the way martina wants to lose her no.1 spot, nor is it how jen wants to reach it

i was quite sure martina would beat a top 10 player and reached the finals for the first time in what seem like years

congrats to jen for reaching no.1
she really deserves it this year

Tennis is tennis and it was only a matter of time before Martina lost her Number 1 ranking!

What is sad though is the circumstances is which she lost her ranking. I'm not a Martina fan but to lose your ranking because she got injured is quite sad. i fully expect Martina to bounce back to her best.

CONGRATULATIONS JENNIFER ON BEING NUMBER 1 IN THE WORLD!!

I am happy for Jennifer to become No.1 now, but definitely not in this way!!! The way I hope is that Jen is going to win the title, or at least up to the final!! Her loss at QF against Testud is quite a disappoinment for me!!!

I hope Jen will do much better in her next tournament at Zurich, really showing that she is the No. 1!!!

If she ends year like that, it will be just another step in devalueing of WTA #1. When was the last time a #1 had only three titles
in rolling 52? Incredible..

It's kind of irony that Martina loses #1 when she has her first (on my memory , at least ) match-related injury.. She was so injury-free..

To all Hingis fans, I can assure you that Jen-Cap fans, such as myself, are not celebrating Martina's injury. It is a sad end to what has already been a bad year for her.

I do feel that despite Jennifer's loss to Testud, she deserves to be no. 1. She has played incredibly well all year on every surface

Oz Open- Champion
French Open-Champion
Wimbledon- semfinalist
UsOpen-semifinalist.

Tier 1 events
Ericsson-finalist
Family Circle Cup-champion
German Open-finalist
Canadian Cup-finalist

she has also made the semifinals and quarterfinals of other events.

Hingis, on the other hand, has slumped since February. She has not made the final of a slam since the Oz and has not made the final of a tier 1 event this year. Her slump is quite bad for a no. 1 player. This injury comes at a crucial time for her, but perhaps it is a blessing in disguise. Martina plays week after week and she may really need a break to get back into game.

This number 1 ranking has become a moot point over the last two years with more players competing for the big titles-slams and tier 1 events- rather than worrying about their ranking.

Martina will be back next year and so will Jennifer. Hopefully we tennis fans will get to see many more amazing tennis from these two.

it's just truly not the best way to end it..i guess...i doubt jen cap would've wanted to take the rankings that way....but she did have an impressive year
i'm more concerned bout hingis tho....i hear the ankle injury is kinda severe....i just hope this isn't the end of her for this year.
and we wouldn't know whether she would've won against davemport so let's not make predictions since that match is over with. i would have wanted her to win but..just all the best to her

Everyone knows that I am not a captiati fan---but in actuallity , hingisova has been #1 by default for a long time.... It's quite obvious that the terrorists attacks had prolonged the inevitable :p

Only one player in Top 10 has less titles in last 52 weeks than Capriati, and that's Serena who played only 9 tournaments. Hingis hasn't won a tournament for more than 7 monthes. If Capriati doesn't win Zurich or Chase, she'll beat that number. It is truly pitiful that Venus is not playing, it should have been her..

Didn't Hingis get to #1 by Steffie defaulting.. It happens. Tennis is about staying Injury free .. I remember Hingis comments during the Ericcson Open, she said something about "Can Venus keep it up".. refering to Venus constant injuries. Looks like the same can be said of Hingis. Hingis/Venus/Anna/Lindsay they are not getting any younger. IMHO I really dont think anyone is jealous of Hingis here.. especially a Venus fan. It's not all about that mere little number. Its more to do with results. Sheesh Venus may surpass Hingis.. who knows.

Even though Hingis got hurt.. I still think we should have a congratulation thread for Jennifer. NOT everyone gets that top rank. Jennifer came a long way and she deserves it.. I am waiting patiently for Venus to get hers too! If only she didn't get bounced in rd 1 of the French Open. Look It's sad that she had to default but that's the way tennis goes. Also imho Martina will be back soon .. I say around next week.

Interesting fact YS.. As much as I love Venus, I so want to kick her a*s [evil grin]. If she would only show up sometimes :p
