Donna caught off guard a bit in the first set but adapted well.Been a very mature performance all week.Mind you I just realised today six years since she was in the Birmingham final.Time flies when you are sitting around watching tennis.:surprise:
Hopefully she can finish the job tomorrow now.:cheer:
I didn't see the first set but the second and third set really weren't particularly bad for Maria with the exception of her being weirdly bad at winning the important points in the second set. She played similarly against Tomljanovic; Vekic just handled it much, much better. She was able to finish points before they could turn into endless slice exchanges and she had a lot of excellent passes when Maria approached the net.
This was kind of a classic WTA match in the "the higher ranked player plays awfully until losing the first set, then wakes up" sense which feels quite common these days. It really wasn't anything about Maria's level varying though. Vekic played two excellent sets against a player ranked far below her and a bit of clutchness/luck got her a scoreline that's unfairly harsh to the loser. Maria has no right to win even a set against a player of Vekic's caliber.
