The seedings won't change apparently.

I would have liked to see Jennifer play (with ex boyfriend Xavier possibly on the other side of the nt) :p

Davenport Substitutes Williams in Hopman Field
22 December 2003

Former world No. 1 tennis player Lindsay Davenport is a late addition to Perth?s international tournament, the Hyundai Hopman Cup, with the withdrawal of America?s Serena Williams.

Williams has ruled herself out of the ITF teams championship after winning the Cup last summer with James Blake.

She has not played competitively since winning the Wimbledon women?s singles crown in early July and is not quite ready to return to action.

Williams was putting all her efforts into being ready to go at the Australian Open in mid-January.

Hyundai Hopman Cup Tournament Director Paul McNamee says ?Serena regrets not being able to come back and defend her title, but we have a wonderful replacement in Lindsay Davenport,?.

Williams has moved to No. 3 in the rankings as a consequence of her absence from the women?s Tour in the last half of 2003, while her replacement in Davenport is at No. 5 after an outstanding year following recovery from injury.

Davenport, a winner of Grand Slam singles titles at the US Open, Wimbledon and the Australian Open, won at Tokyo this year and had finals appearances at five other Tour events, plus reached the semi-finals at the last Grand Slam, the US Open.

The tournament seedings remain unchanged with the USA staying at No. 1 and the Group draw the same, setting up a clash between Davenport and world No. 4 Amelie Mauresmo, of France and world number 7 Anastasia Myskina of Russia.

The field also has three other former No. 1 players in Russia?s Marat Safin, Australia?s Lleyton Hewitt and Belgium?s Kim Clijsters.

Hyundai Hopman Cup XVI, to be held from January 3?10, 2004, is the official Mixed Teams Competition of the ITF. Prizemoney for the tournament is $1 million with the winners sharing $240,000.
