Another seeded victim who made a quick exit was No. 7 Bianka Lamade of Germany, who dropped out in straight sets to unseeded Maria Emilia Salerni of Argentina, 1-6, 4-6.

Colombia native and crowd favorite Fabiola Zuluaga, who made the tournament as a wild card entry, posted a 6-3, 7-5 victory against Croatian Maja Palaversic.

In an all-Spanish matchup, Eva Bes got the best of Conchita Martinez-Granados in a hard fought contest, 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 6-3. another encounter that went the distance saw Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia defeating Klara Koukalova of the Czech Republic, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 6-4.
