No. 1 Clijsters announces media boycott on website

September 13, 2003
LONDON (Ticker) - Women's world No. 1 Kim Clijsters has decided to stop speaking to the media after her father sparked a controversy in Belgium following the U.S. Open.

Clijsters made the decision after her father Leo, a former Belgian international soccer player, questioned new U.S. Open champion Justine Henin-Hardenne's weight and muscle gain.

Clijsters performed disappointingly, and far below her best, in the French Open and U.S Open final defeats to Henin-Hardenne.

In interviews this week when the two women returned to Belgium, Leo Clijsters insisted he did not suggest Henin-Hardenne was taking drugs. But by indicating his belief that her growth was unusual, a storm erupted which has threatened to damage the relationship between Belgium's leading players.

The two also are ranked No. 1 and 2 on the WTA Tour, with with Henin-Hardenne quickly gaining on Clijsters.

A statement on Clijsters' website read, "In agreement with Kim Clijsters, those in her entourage have decided to observe a silence with respect to the press, for an undetermined duration."

The statement added that a list of those with whom Clijsters would agree to speak, would be printed on the website, www.kimclijsters.be, "in good time."

"It seems obvious that several newspapers and magazines will be from now on 'persona non grata,' because of their disparaging columns and other 'sensational' articles, whose goal is to gain a reaction from Kim and her entourage," the statement continued. "People who wish to increase their circulation by this manner can go on their way, they are no longer welcome."

bull? but what is it called when they talked about the sisters? "facts"

its funnie isn't it? not puting down u or anything or your statements, but when the sisters were getting the blows, people didn't seem to agree, as much as we have all come together to agree with the belgians.

its all with the part of famousness (new word?) kim and justine are just gonna have to deal with it. hell you have venus and serena have to deal with the count of their uncle or half brother or whatever, telling the press that richard fixed they matches. thats all in the family, and a lil to close for me personally, but the sisters have grown through it all. i think these two will as well. just lesson to learn in life. i think they may be taking to to seriously. but hey its they decision to shut up to the press at the time being.
Yes, I must admit you're right. when it comes to the sisters, it's different.
Anyway, I don't think Kim's decision is a good one : she'll never win against the media.

You know he's bringing her down. Let's face it, his career's washed out. He's going down.
I hope kim is smart enough to think for her own in the end
I don't think they will boycott the international media. Only the Belgian media who criticize them
I've quickly tried to translate Lei's explanation on Kim's site.

People should stop trying to smear campaign against Kim or Justine. And also stop putting words in my mouth.

Are we getting too used to two Belgian girls having great results. Aren't there enough sportive aspects anymore to write about? It was already a fact with the so-called "blisters-case" and now it has reached an absolute low with what is written about justine. And then they are trying to blame it all on me.

As an answer to the question why Kim is constantly losing from Justine now and if we don't have to employ a psychologist (another stupid thing) I have to say this: Don't you see Justine has gained a lot of power, has become stronger and thus serves much better and is -because of that- the logical winner? It doesn't seem like a controversial statement to me. Justine and her team have worked very very hard the past year and so, if you win, it's because of all the effort. If she keeps on training and playing like that, she will keep on winning from Kim and all the rest.

We have a good relationship with Justine and the people around her and we respect each other. So why should I judge someone like her? Of course I'm disappointed when Kim loses, against anyone. But I have the fair-play -and Kim too- to congratulate the other one on her victory.

Maybe everyone should treat both players with more respect and be happy they are number 1 and 2 in the world. And they work very hard for it. Can we leave it at that?
Those who want to talk about the sportive aspect are still welcome in the future. But if they come for a story to set people are audience against each other, I say no. They already tried it with Appelmans and Van Roost in the past, and now again. I can only think this is sad and I refuse to have a part in it.
Lei Clijsters.

Actually It was more WS fans versus Justine Fans. I don't see too many WS fans who have a problem with Kimmie.

Now its Justine Fans Vs Kim Fans and its hysterical because who didnt see this coming?

illegal drug innuendo
accusations of cheating
accusations of faking

Its high drama! Justine fans sure are paranoid aren't they? The media will now focus like a magnifying glass on the top two players in the world.
LMAO the similarity with Lleyton goes to more than just looks!

Hahaha....that´s a crap comment. I still think that Kim´s stronger than Justine. IMO Kim´s tighs alone have to weight more than Justine, so the stronger thing doesn´t work.

The stronger thing didn´t work against Serena at Wimbledon, it only works on slow surfaces. The real problem for Kim is that she´s the female Henman. " I have everything already, Mommy is there, Daddy´s there...why should I be fighting?!" Whereas Justine´s over my body mentality needed to win slams.

Richard never got that far, yes, he made controversial statements but he never accused anybody of anything, her never put a foot in his mouth as that moron of Lei does all the time.

One thing is controversy and another thing is accusing someone of an illegal activity.

I am still not convinced he has saved his ass of being sued.
hmmmmm I'm totally uninterested in what the media thinks of Lei but i understand he didn't come straight out and say she was using drugs

i think its weird Henin has grown so much so shortly.....but i think its inspiring. you dont see behind the scenes as a fan, but i guess she's worked hard. thats good. shes at the top of the game, people are gonna hate. there's no getting away from it.

it's the way certain people deal with it that amazes me. i think Henin fans are caring too much about what he meant or didn't mean

i also think Kim is getting a lot of criticism that she doesn't deserve. personally i cant stand it when people say they hate the sisters because of Richard, Kim because of Lei, and Justine because of Carlos and his comments.

like i said before, the player's can't control them :) they are just gonna come out and say whatever in the hell they want to anywayz.

if you're gonna dog a player, at least make it a good reason like because they kick your faves ass

This was in our newspaper a few days ago...

C. Rodriguez and P. Etcheberry are sick of the doping insinuations and reveal Justine's trainingprogram.

The secret of Florida...

period
Six weeks in november-december 2002, every day. Throughout the season her physical condition is maintained by sessions of 45 minutes a day.

plan for the day
In the morning: one hour of physical training, one and a half hour of tennistraining
In the afternoon: idem

physical training
Endurance: 15 x 200m each time with a pauze of 45 seconds, on 85% of her maximumcapacity. Interval: 6x20m, 5x50m, 4x100m, 2x400m
Stomach and backmuscles: Streching forwards and backwards with a powerball (2kg) between feet or legs,4 times a week. Bouncing a powerball against a wall and catching it sitting, leaning backwards
Legmuscles: Sprinting and tennissing (without tennisball) with an elastic band around the waist; jumping on and off a bench (series of 8)

Progression
Before training with Pat Etcheberry:
200m: 41 seconds
400m: 1min30
bench: knee-height
Now:
200m: 35 seconds
400m:1min16
bench: hip-height

secret
The intensity. Variating different musclegroups for one hour without a break. exemple: While legmuscles are resting, stomachmuscles are being trained

growmargin
next year: 30-40% !!!

of course you are right, Venus and Serena couldn't be blamed for what Richard said (although in retorspective, what Richard said doesn't sound that bad now), or Justine for what Carlos said or Kim for what Lei :p said.

But they are not totally inocent, Kim and Justine. (and notice I am saying that about my fave as well).

For example, when Justine said that stuff about Lindsay in Zurich, it wasn't her coach, it was her.

And Kim? all the trash she talked in San Diego? that' wasn't Lei, and when she kept contradicting herself in Toronto? (I am tired/I am not tired, I play too much/ I don't play too much) then Kim is not the sweetheart everyone pretends her to be.

We have discussed this already but when Kim lost to Lina, she did sign autograph on the court, where the tv cameras where, but I was outside and there is where the fans really expect players to sign, and she just walked through ignoring little kids beggins her for an autograph, and with a real angry face. It's ok but that's not the behaviour of a sweetheart.

That's the problem, Kim has been pictured so much as a sweetie that she believes it, and for her to keep that image is more important than everything else, and I think Kim tried to unfairly use her "image" to get the media against Justine, I think she knew what she was doing/saying in San Diego, so she isn't an angel, neither is Justine but at least she doesn't pretend to be one.

In fact, the whole Kim's story has made me appreciate Serena more, I might not like what she says but with her, you get what you see, not a fake personality, I prefer somene honest even if I don't like their personality, because someone like that is someone you can trust, I don't think you can trust someone like Kim.
