2001 Oz: Jennifer Capriati broke through in a big way!

2001 French: Justine Henin (semis) and Kim Clijsters (runner up) both broke through to the 'next' level of Grand Slam play.

<br />So, who will it be in 2002 and why do you think so?

I think Iroda Tulyaganova is ready for the big time. I'm not sure she'll win a Slam, but I think she may make some big big upsets along the way to possibly a quarter or a semi or 2 in 2002.

I also think Monica will 'breakthrough' (again) and get some big wins over big players on the way to at least a final or 2 in 2002.

Elena Dementieva gets my vote. I think she'll make a slam semi or final this year. Probably Roland Garros.

I think Daniela Hantuchova could suprise too.

And I think Jelena Dokic will make her first slam final next year. Not sure if that would count as a breakthrough or not, really.

I hoping Daniela Hantuchova! She's yet to go deep into a slam draw yet, but I think with the experience she gained from last season, she should be able to make the next big jump for 2002 <img src="smile.gif" border="0">

I like Iroda Tulyaganova and I want her to do well but realistically I can't see her doing that well next year at a slam. She struggled tremendously on hardcourts this year so I can't see her doing anything on that surface. I think she can maintain her ranking, maybe she can do well on grass or clay but I don't think she'll be like in the top 10 which people are predicting.<br />Breakthrough in a slam would probably be on a fast surface Daniela Hantuchova. Salerni possibly as well just basing on the fact that junior #1's always do well two year after they leave.

Williams Rules: If I have my facts straight Kanepi is a junior player, who is ranked number 6 in the world. The catch is, that she is ranked number 6, having only played half a dozen tournaments or something like that. She won Junior Roland Garros 2001... that was also won with less than half the tournaments that her opponents played.

It won't exactly be a breakthrough, but expect atleast one of the veterans to really make a splash in a GS in the twilight of their careers. Could be Coetzer, ASV, Testud or Martinez. One of them will go out with a bang.

For the youngsters.. Elena Bovina (Us or Oz), Iroda Tulyaganova (probably RG), Hantuchova (wimbledon, us, oz).

Inmjury plagued Chanda Rubin and Elena Dementieva (who everybody seems to have turned their back on) could also be a surprise, as could Mary Pierce or even....dare i say it, Anna Kournikova <img src="wink.gif" border="0">

Iroda and Meghan will cause an upset. I predict that they would beat the Williams or Jen Cap.

Jelena will reach one slam final, maybe Wimbledon.

Any of the belgians will finally win a GS.

When we say "breakthrough", do we mean semi or better? Or quarters or better?

Dementieva broke through in 2000, but I'm confident she can get a semi appearance in 2002.

Iroda - unless she gets a *cough* weak draw, I don't think she's ready just yet for a semi appearance. She still can over-egg the pudding a little (I guess all the big hitters have that tendency).

Bedanova.. Testud in her (most likely) final year playing singles would be an outside semi- bet with her year end form - and her generally solid from anyway.

Hantuchova needs a good draw, and my last would be Nagyova.

becca pretty much summed up kaia, she became the #1 junior by playing several tournaments LESS than the average top ten player. hey, sound familiar? maybe youd like her <img src="wink.gif" border="0"> she comes from nowhere to just kill everyone. after winning the italian and french open juniors (very big tournies) she played in germany, qualified easily and lost to anke huber 3-6 5-7. she then played 2 itf tournaments, finaling pretty easily losting to matea m in both in 3 sets i believe. with 6 pro tournaments, shes ranked right on the edge of the top 200, she honestly destined to be top 10, or a dissapointing top 20 (dissapointing if she doesnt break top 10) 16 years old, from estonia. not the prettiest thing, but shes got her own look going for her and its unique and alright. when you see her, shes pure muscle, very very very very strong. shes never played on grass, lost in the first round of her first grass tourney after the french. shin splints so she missed wimbeldon. us open struggled that week i think from lack of play, lost int he quarters i believe. good doubles player. then she played a fer more itf tournies, losing in first round qualies <img src="eek.gif" border="0"> <img src="eek.gif" border="0"> !! i know!!! and she really doesnt care about her junior ranking apparently, as shes let it drop to 10, with no intention of defending and finishing #1. so with two very early qualies losses, shes on the brink of 200 with 6 tournaments. thats very good.
