LONDON, Oct 31 (Reuters) - Nurturing Michael Jordan-type icons and promoting constant innovation within the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) will drive women's tennis into the "jetstream" of sport, says new WTA Tour president Kevin Wulff.

Wulff, a former senior manager at U.S. sportswear giant Nike, was this week appointed president and replaces Bart McGuire as chief executive officer at the end of the year.

Wulff, eager to get to grips with the role, has big plans for women's tennis.

"If we don't innovate and really think about having the courage to innovate, literally every day, I don't think we're doing the players and the tour justice," he said in a telephone conference.

"That's really going to be one of our foundations for moving forward -- trying every day to innovate."

Wulff worked closely with Jordan over several years and said there were characters within women's tennis similar to the man who is credited with almost single-handedly turning NBA basketball into a global phenomenon.

SAME QUALITIES

"I know Michael really well," Wulff said. "I (have) had the honour, and I underline honour, with presenting him with his four or five Most Valuable Awards, top All-Star Vote Getter Awards, all that. So I got to know Michael the person really well behind the scenes.

"What I am really energised about and really excited about, with regards to the athletes on our (women's tennis) tour, is they (have) got a lot of the same qualities. Just an unbelievable relentless competitive style.

"I think also the thing that really sets Michael apart was his just unbelievable style and sophistication on, but also off, the court.

"And I really think a lot of our players have that same style and sophistication and really have a lot of interesting things to say.

"I think we have a lot of players, a lot of new players and up-and-coming players that have that potential. I think part of what will do really well moving forward is really bringing that out.

"Tennis fans and tennis players are humans and like to see the human side... like to be entertained, as well as see great sport.

"That's a lot of what we will do and I think we will really focus on the players as being the centre-piece of really what the WTA brand is all about and what the Tour is all about."

Good luck to Kevin and I hope he can develop and implement his vision. To bad he had to start out on a sour note left by his predecessor regarding the promising "Jordaness" of the future, Venus Williams

Well at least he has has a plan for the tour unlike Burt Mcguire who fed all this drama to the press and made it looked like some catty tour..at least this guy has a more respected angle...I hope Mcguire goes to the restroom forgets to wipe and goes out to present the winner's trophy. Then everyone will know what he's really full of.......rhymes with it.....lol
