she beat Conchita in 1st meet on clay and lost the other 4 ( next 3 on clay as well)

Natasha Zvereva won all 3 matches on clay.

Who else had a winning record v Navratilova ( having played more than once) ???

That is an incredible record in anyone's language, also something that is noteworthy, if not all, then almost every Graf and Seles match was played past her 30th birthday. Martina was 30 almost 31 when she beat Graf at Wimbledon 87, and US open the same year. She was 36 when she beat Graf at the Tokyo final and also 36 when she became the oldest player ever to beat a number 1, in monica Seles in March that year in the final of Chicago. She still is the oldest tournament winner (37 something) when she won paris in 94, beating Julie Halard. She had incredible runs at the US open well into 30's as she did Wimbledon. It is the incredible fitness and Talent of her that makes her a wonderful doubles player today at 45. I don't think her Natural talent will ever be seen again, but I really hope so

and TBE, you are quick to mention that Martina won 5 of her first 6 against Steffi, but failed to mention she lost either her first 8 or 10 against Chris

Lol, I think that's the first time I see Conchi leading a top player in their head to heads. Well done Conchi

Omg, poor Zina! She almost lost the 50% of her career matches against Martina lol

Is that from the ITF database? They're missing quite a few (especially before 1977). The final Martina-Chris tally was 43-37. (I've heard it so many times, it's ingrained.) Chris had a 20-4 lead early in Martina's career. Using basic subtraction, that leaves a 39-17 edge the rest of the way. And IIRC, over the last 7 years of their rivalry, when both were at the top, they played almost half of their matches (37), with Martina winning almost 80% (28-9).

I'm sure the totals vs Austin are higher. I think it's like 21-13. Zummi could probably quote the exact # off the top of his head.

The record vs Graf is impressive when you consider:

Graf's greatness (no matter who you think is the best ever, most will agree that Graf is certainly the best ever not named Navratilova)

They didn't play until well after Steffi was 16, and about to break into the top 10, and Martina was nearly 29.

They split their last 4 meetings, from the time Martina was just about 35, onward.

Likewise the record vs Seles, although a losing mark, is impressive because they didn't first play until Monica was in the top 10, and Martina was 33. Also, Martina was the last player to defeat the "old" Monica in a completed match.

I guess the most impressive thing is that Martina did enough after the age of 30 in singles alone to get into the Hall of Fame.

Conchi ........
now you tell me: if you'd play Martina what tactics would you use....

(answer: moon balls like Conchi does: the record speaks for itself).

Martina's COMPLETE career results are at:

http://members.tripod.com/Navratilova/
Zummi even figures up all her head to heads.
To me the most impressive stats are how Martina kept it close to Graf and Seles, two champs who were at least 10 years younger.

I've a slight disagreement with Brian. Evert was hardly at her peak after 1982. In 1983-4 Martina was at her best, but Evert was going through a tough divorce and nearing 30 two years before Martina.

In 1983, Navratilova had a record of 86-1 in matches, winning 16 titles, and losing just 9 sets!!!!!!!!!! wow.

tenniscorner.net says her record against Evert was
43-37. Are there any 2 players who have played each other more times? also notheworthy: from 82-84, martina had a 13-match winning streak against Chris. Chris had a 8-match and two 5-match streaks. This seems like tennis of another planet!

Thanks for the plug, Brian, rollo & Adrian

Of the top of my head, here are some significant head-to-head match-ups:

Chris Evert, 43-37
Billie Jean King, 9-5
Maria Bueno, 1-0
Margaret Court, 5-2
Evonne Goolagong, 15-12
Monica Seles, 7-10
Steffi Graf, 9-9
Pam Shriver, 37-3
Lindsay Davenport, 1-0
Hana Mandlikova, 28-7
Tracy Austin, 21-13
Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, 12-3
Rosie Casals, 9-4
Zina Garrison, 33-1
Jana Novotna, 6-1
Gabriela Sabatini, 15-6
Virginia Wade, 17-7
Conchita Martinez, 1-4
Andrea Jaeger, 11-4
Helena Sukova, 26-6
Jennifer Capriati, 1-1
Mary Pierce, 1-1
Lori McNeil, 12-0
Amanda Coetzer, 4-0
Mary Joe Fernandez, 8-0
Natasha Zvereva, 8-5
Nathalie Tauziat, 9-1

The only players Martina has a losing record to (among those she has played more than once) are Seles, Martinez and Huber (1-2). And the losing record against Seles only showed up when Martina was 35. Against Martinez at 36 and Huber at 38.

Truley the best there is.

When people went on about Steffi being so great because her game adapted to the Williams and Hingis etc, (i.e the nEXT generation), they should have taken a look at Martina's career.
She not only competed, but had winning records against the next generation of Graf, Sanchez, and Sabatini et al...

Monica came along even later, and Martina almost managed to split their meetings evenly...

From BJK, to Court, to Evert and Austin and Mandlikova, to Graf, Sanchez and Sabatini and Seles, Martina was inferior to none!!!
