hello everybody

last year i had a great time at swisscom challenge, where i spent all 8 days watching tennis until my head exploded. this year i have not enough time, and certainly not enough money to go to the tournament every day, but at least i went there yesterday sunday. :)

i was slightly disappointed when i arrived at the site to find out that "only" qualifying matches were being played. i remember that last year they played first round matches on sunday already. of course you can get brilliant matches at qualifying, too - but not yesterday  ...

there is a difference between powerful and aggressive tennis, as illustrated by these two players. they are not powerful, but they attack whenever they can, and both try to find the way to the net whenever they're given a chance. tina's slice is a bit dubious, and magui didn't move all that well, but it was definitely the most entertaining match of the day. in the 2nd set it looked like tina was going to falter, but somehow she clawed her way back and could finish the match in 2.

in this match both players had their distinctive roles: katarina was the one to hit harder and to attack, rita, well, she's your pocket-pistolesi. which means that she's easily underestimated. and though katarina is attacking more, she doesn't exactly blow her opponents off court, so rita could hang in there very well and take it to three sets, but it was all katarina in the end.

oh my, oh my. i was really looking forward to this match: two experienced players who would surely show us their skills and a good fight. of course it wasn't meant to be :( . it says all that amy played very badly and could still win this match with a score of 6:3 6:1. especially her serve was off big time, she had at least one double fault in every service game, once even 3 in a row! she returned amazingly well, and that won her the match.
i really like elena, but the question after such performances must be: where is she going??

i only saw the 1st set: hmmm, so when did julia turn into a sex bomb? and was it her whom dokic stole her "new" serve from? ;) but i'm being unfair, because julia played very well. but everybody was there to see what this timea kid was all about. and it was obviously tot overwhelming an experience for her. she was utterly nervous and hit some achingly awful shots. and then she always looked at julia with her big "i'm so sorry"-eyes. which was cute, of course. i was mightily surprised when i founf out at home that alicia and magui only managed to win this match in a third set tie-breaker! looks like timea could pull herself together in the end. :D

i hope you enjoyed this little report.
