ok, since there has been so much bitching and moaning about who should be number 2,3, and 4 and that kim could possibly surpass serena after wimbledon, i have thought and thought about a perfect ranking system. People have always argued about quality vs. quantity, and i've decided that the ranking system should really be more about quality. So,
they should do it as a weighted system. Quality would be worth 82% of the total rankings and 18% would go to quantity. This would insure that players play a large amount so that there can't be someone who only played 5 tournaments, won them all, but played nothing else. Here is how the ranking system would go:(all percentage will be rounded)

the system would not be based on points, but rather on percentages.

Rules and Guidelines:

1. 7% would be based on winning percentage of the past 52 weeks of all tournaments excluding slams, wta tour championship, tier 1's, and tier 2's.
2. 29% would be based on winning percentages in slam performances.
3. 7% would be based on tour championships
4. 21% would be based on winning percentage in all tier 1 events.
5. 18% would be based on winning percentage in tier 2 events.
so, winning percentage(performance) would account for 82% of the ranking system.

Next, amount of tournament plays would be an important factor, and wins would be as well.

6. 18% would be based on amount you play:
with max of 10%, if you play 1-10 tournaments in a year, you'll
get 5% added to overall percentage.
if you play 10-13 tournaments, you'll get 10% added to overall
percentage.
if you play 13-16, you'll get 13%.
if you play 17-higher, you'll get all 18%.
this is to insure top players play at least 13+ tournaments in a year and to make the winning percentage is fair.

7. Player with the best winning percentage who has played over 12 tournaments will get a bonus 3% to add on to overall score.

8. Players must play at least 2 tier 1 events and 3 tier two events and 3 grand slam events in order to not lose points. If a player only plays 1 tier one event, then she will get 1/2 of the points/percentage she gained in the tier 1 event category. If a player only plays 2 tier 2 events, then she will only get 1/3 of her points from that category. If she only played 2 tier 2 events, then she will only get 2/3 of the points she got from that category. Same thing goes for grand slams, if a player only played 1 gs, she will only get 1/3 of the points from that category, if she only played 2, then she will only get 2/3.

here are examples. Since everyone is fascinated with venus, kim, justine, and serena. I'll do this system for them, and if i can find time, i'll do the complete top 20 another time:

Serena Williams:
56-5 in the past 52 weeks(92% winning percentage). 3 GS titles, 3 tier twos, 1 tier 1 win= 7 wins in past 52 weeks. GS winning percentage: 27-1(96%). Percentage in tier 1: 13-2(87%), percentage in tier 2: 14-1(93%). Percentage in wta champ 3-1(75%). 13 tourneys played. So.....

1.(.07)(0)=0%
2.(.29)(96)=27.84%
3.(.07)(75)=5.25%
4.(.21)(87)=18.27%
5.(.18)(93)=16.74%
6.13 tournaments=15%
bonus: 3%
total: 86.1%

Kim Clijsters:
68-16 total(81%), 15-4 GS(79%), 4-0 Tour Champ(100%), 30-8 tier 2(79%), 19-4 tier 1(83%), 6 titles, 22 tourneys.
1. (.07)(0)=0
2. (.29)(79)=22.91
3. (.07)(100)=7
4. (.21)(83)=17.43
5. (.18)(79)=14.22
6. 22 tournaments=18%
total=79.56%

Justine Henin-Hardenne
56-15 total(79%), 20-3 GS(87%), 1-1 Tour champs(50%), 18-9 tier 2(67%), 17-3 tier 1(85%), 5 wins, 20 tournaments.
1. (.07)(0)=0%
2. (.29)(87)=25.23
3. (.07)(50)=3.5
4. (.21)(85)=17.85
5. (.18)(67)=12.06
6. 20 tournaments=18%
total:76.64

Venus Williams
45-8 total(85%), 21-4 GS(84%), 2-1 tour champ(67%), 20-1 tier 2(95%), 2-2 tier 1(50%), 12 tournaments, 4 wins
1. (.07)(0)=0
2. (.29)(84)=24.36
3. (.07)(67)=4.69
4. (.21)(50)=10.5
5. (.18)(95)=17.1
6. 12 tournaments=10%
total:66.65%

so....after spending so much time on it, i'd really like to hear ur comments on my system. Was it too confusing? do u need clarifying? do u have questions? Any problems you see with the ranking system? I think its most fair because quality is very important but also the amount that must be played. Grand slams are worth 3/10 of everything, which is alot considering that its only 4 tournaments. If you broke my system down, each gs would be worth 7.5%, each tier 1 would be worth 2.33%, the tour champs would be worth 7%, and then tier 2's would be worth like, well i dont kno how many there are in a year. But please, any comments would be great. Oh, and i think that its pretty much justified that kim is the true number 2, not venus. How can one say that venus has played great quality when she has only played 2 tier 2 tournament and has a 50% winning percentage!!!!!!!! She's 2-2 in tier 2 tournys!!!!!! And she's only had 4 wins compared to kim's 6. However, i must say, 20-1 in tier two tournaments, wow!

It would be interesting if u could do the rankings for this system .... and keep them up to date. It would take some time to start off, but updating each week shouldn't be too hard, if u understand the system that well cause u made it.

Anyway ..... try doing the top 20 at least. It would be v.intersting.

promise

i promise i'll get in the top 20 by this weekend, i'm so busy this week and next week so this weekend will be the only time i have free, but yea, i think you'll see a lot of variances in the top 20. obviously, the top four isn't good enough to show if the system is effective.
