You know.... players who get so much hype from the press and etc and disappoints a lot on court.

My pick:
Anna Kournikova

Justine Henin... I will admit that she has a beautiful backhand, but I just don't understand the hype surrounding her

I guess ending number 7 in the world and getting to the final of wimbledon was just hype.

Ashley Harkleroad at the moment. Commentators imply that she's a brilliant junior when there are many much better around. Widjaja for example is much more promising but because of her clothes or lack of them Ashley is getting all the attention.

Anna isn't overrated. She's overhyped, but when you listen to the way that commentators talk about her they imply that she can't play tennis. She receives more attention than her achievements warrant, but it's not that her abilities are overrated.

Ashley Harkleroad
Jennifer Capriati

both in different ways. Harkleroad's not a top junior - players like Svetlana Kuznetsova, Eva Birnerova, Kaia Kanepi don't get half as much press. Angelique Widjaja certainly doesn't, and she's won a senior WTA tourney.
Capriati - not to denigrate her achievements, and she fully deserved acclaim for the AO win, but she's only won 2 tournaments since. Sure, one of them was RG, but it was a RG severely depleted by upsets (esp. of the two faves, Mauresmo and Venus). Capriati had to beat: Serena (playing abysmally), Hingis (playing even more abysmally) and Clijsters (on her worst surface, in her first GS final, having just endured an appalling clay court season). Winning a tournament is never bad, but that RG was about as weak for Jennifer as the Tier 3 in Oklahoma City was for Monica Seles. Capriati's been heralded as a member of the elite, which she clearly isn't; Seles and Davenport swiftly gained their revenges after Oz, Serena's got over what was clearly a mental block, and victories over Hingis - well, seems like everyone's got one now . Capriati is better than she was last year, and a challenger at Slams, but not a favourite, and not a member of the elite.

Serena Wiliams-she won only one Slam, her best ranking was n.4,won only 3 tourneys this year.i think she receives so much attention cos she is Venus's sister.Venus is a phenomen, but Serena has still to proof if she is good like her sister or not.for now she is great player, not a true champion.

I agree about capriati sartrista7.. Since it's the off season, I've had the opportunity to study 3 matches of hers... She really never has any game plan... It's HIT, HIT, HIT HARDER for a whole match--- and if you've noticed it stopped working after the family circle cup..

Having said that , I think she will hang around the top 10 for a while longer , but players like Monica , Lindsay & Venus will continue standing in her way as far as winning any more slams.. Serena and Kim will also definitely be very big threats to her
Lindsayfan, as a Williams *2 fan , I somewhat agree with you, although I think the term over- hyped is in order here

Amelie Mauresmo...she's very often among the big favourites, but never manages to win a big tournament. I think she's overrated too.

Anna Kournikova is not overrated!!!!!! In contrary!!!!! Lot's of people think she's just cute and think that she can't play tennis. But Anna is very talented!!!! No doubt about that, she is among the most talented players in the WTA Tour.
I don't see why you can say that Justine is overrated..reaching the semi's at RG, finals at Wimbledon, that's all just coincidence??? She has a beautiful backhand, but why constantly talk about the backhand?? Her forehand is great too, her technical skills are great, she moves well and she understands the game well. I'm sorry...but she's just one of the big topplayers, and certainly not overrated.

the most overrated player ever is without a doubt Monique Viele.

It's all a matter of opinion which the author asked for the last time I checked

I guess we have to define what we consider is overrated.

First, I'll exclude everyone from the current Top 10 because I won't ignore 52-week results. (I'm not sure about Seles but at least everyone else in there has at least reached a Slam final or won a Tier I! How can they be overrated?)

Second, anyone that isn't talked about as being "the next big thing" is removed from consideration (Shaughnessy notably).

That leaves me with Elena Dementieva, but she was injured (missed quite a bit on what she claims is her favorite surface) and somehow still managed to hang in the Top 20 and reach the Moscow final (though admittedly a weaker Tier I draw). She's not under consideration.

And since I throw out Dementieva due to injury, I'll throw out other people who were in the Top 10 in the past year but fell due to injury (like Kournikova).

Then there's the batch of touted youngsters. Lina K had great results for someone under AER. Virginie Razzano got bad draws. Bedanova's just outside the Top 25 and had beaten Seles at the U.S. Open.

That leaves me with Ashley Harkleroad...but, then again, it's Nike who's doing the touting. I think the reporters have been focusing on the circus around her and not her actual tennis-playing ability. Then again, I think I recently read a USTA press release that sang her praises. If it's anyone, it must be Harkleroad.

On the men's side it's definitely Andy Roddick...but I think it could be just a matter of time before he isn't over-rated. Just let him get the "big boy" results first before you go off touting him as "the next great American player/the next Connors/the next McEnroe/the next Sampras/etc."

Even if Monica didn`t reach a big final this year then I still would not call her overrated since she still had bigger success as other players in her career

I used to think that it was Serena. I then saw how she was quickly able to decimate everybody ranked above her (except Venus).

She managed to give Henin, Hingis, and Lindsay their worst losses of the year. We won't talk about the bagels she laid on the the other players outside of the top ten. Anybody who says that she is overrated clearly missed her 2001 season.

She is the real deal. I am not sure if she is going to wait around for Venus to become #1 any longer.

That said: What has happened to Katarina Srebotnik?

I agree with irma, what is the deal with Monique Viele, I keep hearing about her, but I don't see her doing anything.

What is she ranked anyway?

Katarina Srebotnik was at the Championships in Munich believe it or not...in doubles. I guess her singles career has gone down the tubes since she won that title in 1999 but I guess she's a pretty good doubles player.

I don't understand why some people are putting Serena up as "overrated" either. Serena's more of an "underachiever," really. Mauresmo's one too. Henin's not (no history to go on, really), but she won one match and took two sets against Venus. I think if you cut down the little Belgian you're cutting down Venus' achievements too.

There's no way I'd call Amélie "overrated". She WAS the best player on tour prior to the French Open, therefore better things WERE expected of her. Oh, and BTW, the German Open (which she won) was, I believe, a Tier I tourney.

So, "underachiever", maybe......but "overrated"....definitely not.

IMO a lot of players were over-hyped this year but not really overrated. Mauresmo was a favorite for Roland Garros because she had a great clay court season. Sure she bombed out in the 1r but you can't say she is overrated because she proved she can play on the surface. I didn't hear Amelie's name at any other tournament she played in. Capriati was over-hyped but no overrated. You couldn't rule her out from winning a tournament but, her post-Wimbledon form wasn't great. Clijsters and Henin were hyped...but not over-hyped like Capriati...but I think Henin was a little overrated...especially when it came to the Hard Court season. Davenport wasn't over-hyped and surely wasn't overrated. Granted Lindsay didn't win a slam she won a boat load of other titles through out the year. Venus deserved all the attention she got because she won Wimbledon and the US Open. You expect your top player to get over-hyped for marketing purposes. Venus isn't overrated because look at her results. Defending two slams...the first player to do so since Graf in '96. Seles was considered an outside favorite at the Open which was understandable considering the summer she had...but Seles dug her own grave by over-playing herself before the Open and burning out during the open. I don't think Serena was over-hyped or overrated. Granted Serena would be a favorite for the Open because she won there before and had won the Canadian Open a weeks before...plus she results at Wimbledon always make her a favorite there.

I would have to say Ashley Harkleroad is the most overrated and over-hyped. Hasn't done shit in any tournment. Monqiue has done all but play a tournament in aeons.

Most over-hyped male of the year has to be Pete Sampras. One good tournament...the US Open and got murdered in the final. Roddick gets the most over-hyped award.
