:banghead: King objects to Davenport's volley

WIMBLEDON, England -- When Lindsay Davenport sounded off at press conferences this week about Billie Jean King not allowing her to play Fed Cup matches beginning July 19, the behind-the-scenes consensus was that we weren't getting the whole story.

There was, apparently, an e-mail on May 19 where Davenport said her mother was going to be having surgery and she'd be unable to play this time. But with King's publicist only releasing a dry statement through the USTA, there was no way to tell until King arrived in London on Thursday and confirmed the e-mail.

"When I got that e-mail, I moved on," King said.

She selected Venus Williams, Monica Seles, Meghannn Shaugnessy and Lisa Raymond. All of whom can conceivably be there on Monday as required in time for Tuesday's 9 a.m. team meeting, the start of nonstop activities before play commences on Saturday.

Davenport apparently asked to be added to the team after the members had been announced. She reportedly wanted to be added upon hearing that pal and frequent doubles partner Raymond would be on the team.

"There was never any misunderstanding," King said.

King insists that for the week of Fed Cup, the players don't have outside practices. It's about the team. Total commitment.

"If you know you want to play Fed Cup, do you think her mother could have done that operation some other time?" she said. "That's a question I didn't get into it with her."

Granted, it's arthroscopic knee surgery. But that means even if Davenport had told King before the team was announced that she wanted to play after all and come a day late, she wouldn't have been allowed to play.

"I've already cut them a lot of slack," King explained. She said the men arrive for Davis Cup on the Sunday before the next week's competition (sometimes Saturday depending on travel distance), but she lets the women come in Monday.

There's been one exception, King said, when Monica Seles had a family emergency. But that was B.C. (Before Capriati). Any since King kicked Jennifer Capriati off the team in April 2002 for violating team rules?

"No exceptions," she said.

King said she spoke to Davenport earlier and "we're back in good form," King said it was "very inappropriate" for Davenport to speak to the media first.

"You talked to the media for two to three days and didn't have the courtesy to sock it to me," King said she told Davenport. Silence from Davenport. "I was very unhappy and she knew it, about airing her feelings with you (the media) & I told her that she truly hurt my feelings by not picking up the phone."

Although Davenport was still at Wimbledon, she declined an interview request.

Give me a break..... King wants her to have her mother reschedule her SURGERY to play FedCup?!? Talk about being over self important.

And then to go on and slam her for talking to the media 1st?!? She did the same thing at the last FedCup match to Capriati... saying to the MEDIA, not Jen, the she (Jen) needs to apologize and call her.

I used to really admire BJK, but more and more I am growing sick of her. Fed Cup needs a new coach NOW! Her ego is as big as her FAT ASS! :fiery: :fiery: :smash: :banghead:

No exceptions? Umm, hello! What about letting Chanda bring her coach to Fed Cup to practice with him?

And that's total bullshit if BJK says that Lindsay asked to join when the four players had been chosen. Everybody knew that Monica would not be healthy enough to play and there would be a spot open on the team.

Oh, no. Two stories again, and now Billie Jean is talking and Lindsay isn't. So a publicist purportedly got a withdrawal e-mail while Lindsay said she just asked for a delay. Did she withdraw or not? Did Billy Jean just get told that Lindsay withdrew? I'm suspicious of that. She said she got 'what' e-mail? The e-mail Lindsay sent or a different one from the publicist that said something else? I can see why she moved on if that's all she got.

I read in another article that Serena offered to play, but she said that BJK would not accept that she would have to arrive late due to her acting commitments. BJK flat out refused.

I guess Billie is sticking to her guns.

Wow! Billie Jean King rules with an iron fist! She's had enough and won't take anymore!

Good luck to Lindsay's mother with her surgery. :)

It seems as though King is determined to raise the profile of the Fed Cup through a one-woman crusade for the title. There can't be anyone else out there who takes the competition as seriously as her, particularly when it's always been considered a poor relation to the Davis Cup on the men's side. I can understand her turning down Serena's request considering that Serena seems to fancy prioritising her acting over her tennis, but it's flat-out unreasonable to suggest that Davenport's mother should reschedule her surgery.

She does strike me as a woman somewhat divorced from reality and from common knowledge. Take her ludicrous use of the word "girlcott" to distinguish it from the supposedly masculine "boycott" when talking about a potential embargo of the Slams by the top women. Does she even know where the word boycott originates from? It certainly has nothing to do with a masculine prefix...

I suppose one thing you can say for Billie Jean King is she gets attention on the Fed Cup, which is essentially a boring exhibition if you ask me. Until top players turn up regularly for each country it is pointless.

If my team captain picked 2 injured singles players and 2 doubles players who do not play together when she could have had 2 fit top ten players and a top doubles team (or two) I would seriously wonder if she was being bribed by the opposition.

OMG!!! I cannot believe what I've just read! :fiery: :smash:
OMG, this is completely unbelievable. I'm speechless. Something should happen to BJK, I mean, something serious, for her to realise that how inapropiate and immature her behaviour is. Ask her mother to change her surgery date?!!?!?! GIVE ME A BREAK. Who the hell does she think she is?

I seriously believe many top american players should gather together and get BJK into perspective. I don't know how further it can go from now...

Seriously!! BJK is such a freaking idiot and obviously does whatever she can to make other people angry at her! and of course since she was desperate, she agreed to change the policies just to get Meghann, Lisa, and who ever else to play because she was running out of good players! Go Lindsay and Jen for declining her offer after Venus and Monica defaulted!! I can't stand her anymore! I hope those players decline 100% next year and we have such a crappy team that BJK gets fired for making players not want to play! I mean this is getting way out of hand, it's not like Fed Cup is a Grand Slam or something! I mean calm down you freakin' idiot!
