Death of a Nation
Mon 20 March 2006 9pm
Fifteen years after the fall of Communism, Marcel Theroux goes on a personal journey through Putin's Russia.

He discovers a country that's literally dying.

Facts about Russia:

- In the first six months of 2005, the Russian population fell by half a million;

- By the middle of this century Russia could lose up to half of its people, according to Russian government stats;

- Life expectancy for men is 56 years, the same as Bangladesh;

- Ten years ago, the life expectancy for men in Russia was 63;

- The World Health Organisation says that at a conservative estimate more than a million people will have died because of AIDS in Russia by 2020;

- Every other newborn baby is diagnosed with a disease at birth;

- There are more abortions every year in Russia than babies are born;

- Thanks to ill-health, 10 million Russians are infertile;

- A quarter of the population lives below the poverty line;

- Paradoxically, Moscow has more billionaires than any other city in the world;

- Although Russia's population is in freefall, they're still throwing people out. Thirty thousand Meshket Turks have recently had to seek gained asylum in America, having been forced from their homes in the south of the country by discriminatory laws and racist attacks.

That's very sad news. :sad: It seems like health issues and quality of life in Russia are getting worse year after year with no end in sight. :(

The press in this country seem to always only report negative things about Russia :rolleyes: :(

Here you can see another side of the story:

Anti-Russian hysteria dominates North American press It's written by Timothy Bancroft-Hinchey, he is a little crazy I think :lol:
"In a free press, journalists should be, and are, given the space to write the truth and if this truth goes against the policy of a government, so be it. This is called freedom of expression and this is respected in all civilised countries, which includes Russia more than many imagine."

There's plenty of garbage written about every country.
Sometimes criticism is a good thing.

MSf, that advertising tease of the dying bear being the country of Russia was appalling and insensitive. :mad: But it's sad Russia has so many billionarires and yet tens of millions of poor people. :( Hopefully the new Russia will be a better and stronger Russia for all of Russia and not just the fat cats in the future. :)

I really hope so to, Russia is such a beautiful and proud country and deserves better than this, I think that c4 should stop the advery as it's really offensive.

Social and phychological problems exist in Russia, too, of course, but the are resolved differently.
BTW, in Russia doesn't exist at all such thing like counceling, for example.
Only few very sick people would visit the shrink.
I think, anti-depressant drugs are used in Russia, maybe 100 times less than often than in the West

When Russian guy has a problems he is getting drunk with his close friends, talks about everything, and things somehow are getting resolved themselves next day. :D

The abortion rate is approximately the same in US and Russia, much higher than in Europe.
Maybe, they are just having more sex? :D

And don't believe anything in western media about Russia.
It is 90% BS.
And it is not like they lie intentionally. They just don't get it. The worst thing, they are even not trying to understand what Toinby called not different country but different civilization.

And what western media does is just rehashing and recycling of long ago invented myths about Russia, not even trying to understand what is really going on over there.
