Keep the faith Fig... don't lose hope! There is still the chance that Venus or Serena, maybe even both will get stabbed. They'll probably be mobbed while they're playing a doubles match oneday!

There are many, many, many hostile, tennis fans out there who are thinking, "Oh no.. God No!! They're taking our sport... they're taking our sport!" So don't give up kid... these folks just may come through for you yet.

I am not that kind of person, you shouldn't judge people by your own low standards, if Venus Williams had been attacked I would have felt the same way as about Monica, or any other player or human being, but I guess those human feeling are beyond your understanding.

Sartrista7, I understand your interpretation of this thread and how you arrived there. I don't take issue with anyone who may have found this thread funny, save for the originator. It's a matter of interpretation, and I interpret a couple of things in this thread (not just what Fingon mentioned) to be veiled attacks on Monica. Such a thread could be funny to me, but for that the word "good natured" isn't particularly close to my mind when I read the original post.

I do think *some* Venus fans would not think it was funny if Venus was portrayed as this, but that something else entirely. I thought the humor failed because Monica seems SOOO not that type! Sure, she went out with that Microsoft guy, but I don't recall Monica accepting million dollar condos or 45-carat rings as gifts. It doesn't seem to have been done with bad intentions, but it wasn't all that funny, imo.

Anyway, it does raise something interesting, Monica has to rely on a boyfriend to mete out justice for her? I do wonder if someone close to Monica, who saw her the subject of an attempted murder and who saw her depression and despondence when the public didn't from 93-95 (her "dark" years), it might be natural to want to "take the guy out" for revenge. Some she's gone out with, her brother, and father certainly would have access to cash and means to make that happen, if they were so inclined (and I'm not saying they were). If someone did that to my child or husband or something, I might at least think about it. Monica doesn't seem criminally inclined or someone who would condone someone doing this for her (as much as the guy would deserve it), but I wonder if it has crossed someone's mind who is close to her, or some crazed fan for that matter.

I can totally see how the idea of her being money hungry could upset her fans, except that it is a play on the photo and how rich Shieks generally are. I couldn't understand thinking the other part was funny but being upset about the one line, I didn't get. The tone is definitely not negative. When Venus wins Dubai we will get a picture of her dressed to the nines in Middle Eastern Gear and if someone can come up with a catchy story for a photo so be it.

I think far too much is being read into this. Why don't we give Tee the benefit of the doubt? IMO, he was just trying to inject some much needed humor on to this board - not trying to be vindictive or malicious.

Well, the point is, it was a harmless enough joke, but I'm sure there's a picture of Venus with the Antwerp diamonds where her mouth is open or something or her tongue is out or the trophy is in an awkward position against her body, and it would have been easy to write a caption about how Venus was willing to give sexual favors to the tournament director to keep the trophy or perform some lewd act with the trophy in order to keep it, as Venus herself said she loved the trophy. It could have been potentially funny given the proper picture, but there would have been a huge fall out that I was calling Venus a hooker or something or accusing her of being a hussy. In fact, I have no doubt I would have been (will be?) flamed. It's just *some* Venus fans can make somewhat decent jokes about others, but Venus is supposed to be off-limits for similar jokes. Venus has taken a lot of shit over the years that was not fair, but so has Monica. And I'm not even a big fan of Monica.
