Molik upsets Sanchez Vicario at Qatar Open tennis
DOHA, QATAR (TICKER) -- No. 3 Aranta Sanchez Vicario suffered yet another first-round loss, falling to Australia's Alicia Molik on Tuesday in the $170,000 Qatar Open hardcourt tennis event.
After losing in the opening round in both the Sydney and the Australian Open, Sanchez Vicario was beaten by the unseeded Molik, 6-4, 6-3.
Fourth-seeded Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand and No. 8 Nicole Pratt of Australia advanced, but sixth-seeded Rita Grande of Italy was beaten in the upset-filled tournament.
Tanasugarn defeated Emmanuelle Gagliardi of Switzerland, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4), Pratt beat qualifier Asa Svensson, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 and Eleni Daniilidou of Greece ousted Grande, 6-2, 6-4.
Tanasugarn will meet Anastasia Myskina of Russia in the second round. Myskina knocked off fifth seed Angeles Montolio of Spain on Monday.
Montolio and seventh-seeded Tatiana Panova of Russia were ousted on Tuesday. Maja Matevzic of Slovenia eliminated Panova.
No. 1 Monica Seles of the United States and second-seeded Sandrine Testud of France, who received first-round byes, Tanasugarn and Pratt are the only seeded players to make it to the second round.
Seles is coming off Saturday's semifinal loss to Jelena Dokic in the indoor event at Paris. She also was a semifinalist at the Australian Open last month and runner-up at the Pan Pacific Open two weeks ago.
Testud reached the final here last year. She had to pull out of last week's tournament in Paris with a neck injury.
Last year's winner, Martina Hingis, is not entered.
In other first-round matches on Tuesday, Bahia Mouhtassine of Morocco defeated Jana Kandarr of Germany, 6-3, 6-4; Tathiana Garbin of Italy beat Roberta Vinci, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5; Kristie Boogert downed Adriana Gersi of the Czech Republic, 6-2, 6-2; Rachel McQuillan of Australia beat Lenka Nemeckova, 2-6, 6-4, 6-0; and Maria Vento-Kabchi of Venezuela defeated Barbara Rittner of Germany, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6)
The winner earns $27,000.
