Who is the toughest mentally?

I believe that there is three dimensions, when it comes to mental strength.

1.) Willpower = It defines your ability to make your opponent shiver (exp. player A has the ability to undermine his/her opponent, player B without a "proper" game plan)
2.) Hunger = It depends solely of your hunger for a win (exp. player A is more hungry than player B)
3.) Pressure handling = It states your ability to improve or maintain your level of play during the match (exp. player A is down 0-40 in his/her own serve, but manages to save three BP's and holds a serve)

graf or serena - graf for pure 100% concentration at all times, esp under pressure

serena for refusing to give in, and managing to turn from being crap into being too stubborn to lose when it really counts

This should just be a 3-way poll between Serena/Monica/Steffi. Honorable mentions to Navratilova and pre-2009 Venus. No one else really belongs.

Maria Sharapova is never the mentally toughest in this list. Serena edges her in that department. AO SF '05 everyone? :eek:h: and never winning the same player again since losing that match doesn't show one's tough mental.:eek:h:

In the early 90s, Seles' edge over Graf was primarily the mental edge she had. Pre-stabbing Seles, especially was ruthless in the big matches, never afraid of the big moment. Seles and Evert have to rate as two of the mentally toughest champions in tennis history.

Not realising she was even an option =/= being pressed.

Anyway, voted for Vee followed closely by Wozniacki. None of these hoes could think of playing on one leg with an undiagnosed autoimmune disease and still manage to design her own dresses and run her company.

That's right
:yeah:

Evert does, and she does so just as much as Serena/Monica/Steffi because her concentration was unmatched.

Gimme a break. Maria is not mentally tough AT ALL. She just looks grim and determined, but you can watch her vibrating with nerves whenever she's facing break point, especially now that she knows she's a double-fault factory.

She's also ass-lucky, and should have lost that semi to Kvitova.

Mentally tough players come back from huge deficits, throw down aces to save break points, and win matches despite being down match point multiple times. Try Clijsters and Petra, not Maria.

Bitter.Bitter.Bitter :p
Seriously, all you do is complain, it's so annoying. I dislike some players, but I have respect for them, I don't go on a forum and diss them in every thread :help: You're definitely not a good tennis fan...

As for Petra, she lost, big deal! She is 21, she has a full career ahead of her, she will be a great champion, no need to scream after every loss :)

Chris Evert. It was just less obvious to the casual viewer that she was so tough because she looked cute and there were no fistpumps or come on's. But she was as cool as the inside of a refrigirator under all circumstances, her brain was at work non-stop and she was a real killer on the inside.

nonsense...
Maria was unlucky plenty of times in her career in big matches - she should have won that infamous 2005 AO SF and then she was screwed by line calls in a close 3 set lose to Henin a year later. Luck has nothing to do with being able to hold your nerve and not make UE's at crucial times. Petra is a very good player, but she surely doesn't deserve delusional stans like yourself:wavey:

I would say Chris Evert overall. Followed by Serena, Seles and Graf. Serena can get quite emotional, which has resulted in some severe lapses of concentration in big matches which Chrissie never would have stood for.

Somebody's stupid if they think Sharapova belongs with these mental giants. Maria has had too many pathetic losses in GSs that were at least partly mental to be justified as being mentioned among the above. Same reason I can't mention Venus as much as I love her and as mentally strong as she was for a lot of her career. The fact Sharapova's legion of fans in GM has helped her win this poll just shows how useless all this GM surveys and polls are.

Sharapova ain't that mentally strong or at least not the th extent she is hyped to be; she is the ultimate fighter who never gives up, though.
Exactly, there is a difference between being a great fighter and being mentally tough in general. See Jennifer Capriati as another example of this.
