Wasn't it supposed to go much higher with Americans' beloved Andy playing in it?
I'm wondering what was behind this low rating.

Well of course it's all Juan Carlos Ferrero's fault. Damn him for defeating Agassi and taking his ranking. He spoiled the party! :(

This surprised me. As I like watching Andy and think that Sampras is boring to watch. My dad didn't want Andy to win as he said Roddick is too cocky, so maybe that is why some ppl decided not to watch the final. And Juan Carlos is not a big household name in America, even after his RG win, so maybe ppl also didn't watch it for that reason. Also, I have a feeling that maybe many ppl felt that the match wouldnt be close as they were surprised Juan Carlos made it to the final (I was).

Agassi-Sampras and Williams-Williams will remain to be the top audience-getters. I just hope that this changes soon.

Why is this suprising? Men's tennis has suffered from low ratings at the USO for years now with the exception of an Agassi-Sampras final. When you really think about Andy is also a cyborg like the majority of the players on the ATP. What do we know about Andy?

1. He's been touted as the "one" to carry on the American torch.
2. He dates a teen pop singer.

That's it. It's not very interesting IMO. He is a great player with a killer serve and I was happy he finally won a slam, but he is not gonna do Andre/Pete numbers for television.

The same can be said about both Kim and Justine. They are great players, but really not that interesting. Some people just connect more to the public and others don't. It's nothing bad, it's just reality.

My analysis: More ppl turned on when the match started but as it went on, many got bored of Andy's reptitive boming aces and changed the channel.

the reason people are fascinated is because it drives the amount of tennis that will be seen later on and how much money tennis will get because advertisers and tv execs pay attention to ratings and if even an American isn't getting ratings in the U.S. then there is some real trouble in the men's game.

That's funny cause I was under the impression that half of this message board had turned to mens' tennis during this tournament.

It's because the Williams sisters weren't in that final. Duh!

I didn't find it that bad, but maybe that's because I was pretty satisfied with the outcome... Honestly, it hasn't been an interesting match, because Andy didn't quite let Juan Carlos play, serving bombs all the time. But yet Ferrero wasn't even able to use his own weapons, all the toughest rallies went to Andy in the end... I heard some commentator say that Andy's serve was sort of killing the match, that he was serving too well, but I never heard those same commentators say that Sampras served too well. Instead, they would praise him for his consistency...
