All top 44 players commited except:

#5 Li
#27 Kanepi
#43 Niculescu**

2 players entered with SR:

#14 Pennetta
#41 Wozniak

** Niculescu entered $125K Ningbo instead. The thing is rules are clear:

$125K in the Same Week as a Premier or International - Players who would have been, had they entered, a main draw direct acceptance into the Premier or International at the entry deadline cannot enter, accept a Wild Card and/or compete in Singles or Doubles.

So I wonder how WTA is going to handle this since it is clear she should not have been allowed to enter the tournament in the first place.

EDIT: Niculescu was removed from Ningbo and had to enter qualies here when she would have made the MD originally

Q list

Niculescu OUT - Replaced by Ozaki
Puig
Voegele OUT - Replaced by Gavrilova

Re: MD list

Hasn't Flavia used up her PR yet? It seems she has been using them very seldom, trying to get in based on her real ranking whenever possible (which was quite dangeorus at the US Open).

Re: MD list

Given Na Li, Kanepi and Niculescu haven't committed and the Top 44 entered, does that mean that Julia Goerges, Annika and Beck and Daniela Hantuchova (who should be the last direct MD entry) are in?

Re: MD list

Not enough people used their SR and just enough people not committing to let her get in automatically.

Looks like Niculescu will be taking a break in that week.

Farewell to Tokyo...

Thanks for the list!

I'm not sure that Premier5 is considered Premier. If you look at the end of the WTA regulations, there is a list of tournaments with a different category for Premier events.

You only get one SR to use at a slam and Flavia used hers.

Please mind that WTA Tournament categories are comprised of Premier Mandatory, Premier 5, Premier, International & WTA125 (please consult WTA 2013 rulebook p 121f). As Toray Pan Pacific Open is a P5 Event, the rule in question is irrelevant.

However, as Monica Niculescu was ranked #43 at MD entry deadline (YE 2012: # 58) another rule comes into play and she is eligible to accept a WC at WTA125 Ningbo:

From WTA 2013 Rulebook (p 26):
Players ranked 1-50 at the Main Draw entry deadline cannot enter, accept a Wild Card or compete in singles or doubles in a WTA $125K; however, players with a preceding year-end ranking of 11+ who are ranked 11-50 at the Main Draw entry deadline may receive WTA-approved Wild Cards in singles and/or doubles (subject to Wild Card maximums). (See Wild Card - Section III.C.4.)

Premier mandatory, premier 5 and premier 700 all count as premier tournaments.

Obviously she was counting wrongly.

She is free to play 50k in Georgia or USA

Too bad Tokyo isn't going to waste a WC on her.

I'd rather take a break that week cause Beijing is right after (plus she might have to play Q there?)
