Mauresmo Regains No.1 Ranking

ST. PETERSBURG, FL, USA – Australian Open champion Amélie Mauresmo has regained the world No.1 singles ranking on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, holding the top spot for the first time in 17 months.

Mauresmo ascends to the No.1 ranking for the second time in her career and for a sixth non-consecutive week, capping a stellar performance at the end of 2005 and the start of 2006. Having ended last season by winning the Advanta Championships in Philadelphia, PA, USA and the season-ending Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Championships in Los Angeles, CA, USA, the Frenchwoman has won a Tour-leading three tournaments already in 2006. After capturing her first Grand Slam singles title at the Australian Open, the 26-year-old followed with victories at the Open Gaz de France in Paris, France and the Proximus Diamond Games in Antwerp, Belgium. Mauresmo has won 19 of her 22 matches this season, including a 16-match winning streak beginning at the Australian Open and ending in Dubai.

Mauresmo previously held the No.1 ranking for five consecutive weeks spanning September 13 to October 17, 2004. Mauresmo takes over No.1 from Belgian Kim Clijsters, who also recently regained the top ranking on January 30, a spot she had held the past seven weeks consecutively and 19 weeks lifetime.

"Getting back to No.1 is a wonderful feeling," said Mauresmo. "I've had some great results in the past few months, from winning the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Championships to the Australian Open. There have been a lot of memorable moments for me recently, and being No.1 again is another one."

"Amélie has proven what a great champion she is and returning to the world's No.1 ranking is due credit for these wonderful accomplishments. Her grace and professionalism on and off the court is something truly remarkable," said Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Chairman and CEO Larry Scott. "Becoming the world No.1 with the depth of play in today's game on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour is a wonderful accomplishment."

Mauresmo is one of only 15 players to reach the pinnacle of women's professional tennis since the computer rankings were created in 1975. The others are Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Tracy Austin, Graf, Monica Seles, Davenport, Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Justine Henin-Hardenne, Jennifer Capriati, Hingis, Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario, Kim Clijsters and Maria Sharapova.

By far the most deserving due to her success this year, and also to her classy personality... definitely a great role model.
