Mary Pierce is coming back next year. And I'm curious to know what everyone else thinks about her chances of getting back into the top 10 or top 5 next year. I've done some research and here is Mary's record against the current top 10.

1. Lindsay v. Mary 8-2
2. Jennifer v. Mary 2-0 (note: they last played in 1993 at RG in the round of 16)

3. Venus v. Mary 5-2
4. Martina v. Mary 10-6
5. Kim v. Mary--Have never met
6. Serena v. Mary 2-1
7. Justine v. Mary--Have never met
8. Jelena v. Mary 1-1
9. Amelie v. Mary 2-2
10. Monica v. Mary 5-4

So break it down everyone, how does everyone see Mary competing against the current top 10. What are her chances.

Your getting our opinion right? I hope nobody gets mad, but I think she will really have a hard time coming back into the top 5. maybe top 20.
Theres a lot competition in the field right now and anybody in the top 10 could actually beat anyone given the best time, best health and good luck.

But it would be very nice really if she could get back and compete again the way that she does before. If shes really healthy now, I predicted her to be in the competing field about roland garros time.

It will all depend on how much she really wants it ,
I'll give her until after RG , after that she could really be up there or could pack it in.

Mary probably will struggle during the first half of the year. She has not played competitive tennis really for over a year. I am not counting those first round losses earlier in the year. It will take her some time and don't forget, everyone has gotten better while she was away.

I'd be surprised if she makes it to the top 10 (this year). I think upper teens at best.

I think she'll struggle at the start, but will get better with time. If she stays healthy, I think she can get back into the top 10 even top5. Yes they have a ll improved in her absence, but once she gets going, she'll be tough to beat. I'll take a healthy "in the zone" Mary Pierce over anyone anyday anywhere...

I think Mary could make it back into the top 10 but will she is all up to her and her alone. I hope she is practicising and getting prepared for OZ and I hope she come on strong but not strong enough to beat Venus. I would like to see Venus complete a genuine grandslam in 2002 and still end up at number three in the rankings after spending a good 3 months at number one....I just want to see her mess the computer up again.
Mary is very competive but I have never seen a complete match with her including when she retired against Anke Huber in Usopen 2000.........I'm really looking forward to seeing her play and experience this Piercing effect I keep hearing about.

It's a tough ask if anyone's expecting Mary to go from nearly 7 months out of the game to Top 10 by the end of the following year. I just can't see that happening right away. Not with Mary. A player like Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, Lindsay Davenport or Venus Williams, I could probably imagine going from Nay to Yay after a long lay-off. Mary will need to work her way back, take her time, build up confidence again. I can't see her blowing away people from the get-go, unless she's playing a small tourney, but even there, there are going to be girls who will give her the run-around. Best of luck to Mary though. The tour needs her back.
