ACAPULCO, MEXICO (TICKER) -- Fifth seed Conchita Martinez was a first-round casualty Tuesday while injuries played a large part on the men's results at the $925,000 Mexican Open claycourt event.

Martinez suffered her fourth early-round loss in as many tournaments this season with a 6-4, 6-3 setback to French qualifier Emilie Loit. The 29-year-old Spaniard fell to 2-4 this season.

Third seed Amanda Coetzer opened defense of her title with a 6-0, 6-1 thrashing of Mexican wild card Erika Valdes. She won her lone tournament of last season here, saving one match point against Elena Dementieva in the final.

Fourth seed Cristina Torrens Valero topped Adriana Gersi of the Czech Republic, 6-3, 6-3, seventh-seeded Paola Suarez of Argentina dispatched Rossana Neffa-de los Rios of Paraguay, 6-1, 6-3, and Anna Kournikova of Russia defeated Mariana Diaz-Oliva of Argentina, 6-4, 7-5.

Also, Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia defeated Emmanuelle Gagliardi of Switzerland, 6-2, 6-4; Slovakia's Janette Husarova cruised past Germany's Bianka Lamade, 6-2, 6-4; Celine Beigbeder of France eased by Eleni Daniilidou of Greece, 6-4, 6-2; Tatiana Garbin of Italy routed Andreea Vanc of Romania, 6-2, 6-3; Argentine qualifier Maria Emilia Salerni crushed Spain's Nuria Llagostera Vives, 6-1, 6-2; and Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain bested Evie Dominikovic of Australia, 6-2, 6-3.
