Tennis great was given the Stephen F. Kolzak Award, in honor of the late casting director who fought homophobia in the entertainment industry at the annual GLADD Awards in LA over the weekend. Congrats to her...she is a legend both on and off the court :bounce:

Re: Martina Navratilova wins prestigious GLADD award for fighting homophobia in the media

The 18th annual GLAAD Media Awards — consisting of 42 categories — are split into four ceremonies, held in Los Angeles, New York, Miami and San Francisco in March, April and May.

The awards "recognize and honor mainstream media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender ... community and the issues that affect their lives."

Congrats Martina.

I realised the impact she had on the gay community when she came and played in Montreal one last time on court 1. It was full of gays and lesbians, cheering for her, really fun to see.

I agree. Unfortunately there are quite a few people in this board who have absolutely no respect for her regardless of her legendary status. They were always ripping her to shreads for not retiring at a "proper" age, and because she never censored herself on important issues.

Congratulations, Martina!

People who call themselves tennis fans but don't appreciate Martina who, btw, won the US OPEN Mixed Doubles last September at age 49, are simply clueless.

:yeah: ... At age 50 she still has a ranking of #23 in womens doubles even though she is retired and has not played since the Open in sept. :worship:

There's homophobia and then there's Martinaphobia. She probably never realised there's a difference.
