Had to create this, as a good doubles performance with Sveta should see her break into the top 10 again, for the first time in ooh, a long time.

Sad to see that after two GS mixed crowns this year with Leander Paes, they'll be unable to partner up at Flushing Meadows, as he has been hospitalized with suspected brain tumour. Best of luck to him.

I wonder if she'll still play mixed, and who with, at this late stage?

I was thinking about Max Mirnyi could be her doubles partner because both played much better this year than they did last year.

I know they together twice and don't success but try give him another chance? ;)

She's confirmed that she wont play in the mixed doubles now; took this from a post in GM:

August 22, 2003
NEW YORK (AP) -- Martina Navratilova won't play mixed doubles at the U.S. Open because her regular partner, Leander Paes, is hospitalized with a brain lesion.

They teamed to win two of the first three Grand Slam titles this year, at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

``I will not be playing mixed doubles at the U.S. Open without Leander Paes because he is a true partner, and the special connection we share cannot be replaced,'' Navratilova said Friday. ``Our bond was much more than winning titles, and my thoughts are with this wonderful man for a speedy and full recovery.''

Paes, 30, checked himself into a hospital near his Orlando, Fla., home Sunday after having headaches for three days. A scan detected the lesion, and he was transferred to a cancer center Tuesday. It wasn't immediately clear what caused his illness.

``Leander has an amazing attitude and is such a positive person, and I know those attributes are working for him even at this difficult time,'' Navratilova said. ``He and I have promised each other we would team again as soon as he gets well, and I can't wait.''

Their victory at the All England Club in July gave Navratilova a record-tying career total of 20 titles at Wimbledon from singles, doubles and mixed doubles. She also became, at 46, the oldest player to win a Wimbledon title.

Navratilova will play women's doubles with Svetlana Kuznetsova at the U.S. Open, which starts Monday.

Good luck to Martina & Sveta.

Nice words from the old gal about Leander. I'm sure she doesn't mind not playing mixed as the two slam titles she took this year with Paes was probably way more than she dared hope for this season.

Martina and Sveta are scheduled to play today (Thursday) against a "pickup" team and as much as I like Jill, I can't think that she and CMG will have anything at all to hurt "our" team with.

Go Sveta and Martina! :)

Sveta and Martina should be a lock for the season-ending championships! Especially if they do well here at the US Open. I hope they can at least make the semifinals.

See my post about this match....

Anyway...after Martina and Svetlana won the match, courtside was mobbed with kids vying for autographs. After several minutes, Conchita went and took a digital camera out of her tennis bag. She went over to Svetlana and asked Svetlana to take her picture with Martina! Of course, Martina obliged and posed with Conchita while Svetlana snapped away! You should have seen Conchita...she was just BEAMING! It was really a nice endearing moment...very sweet.

Interesting news that top seeds Clijsters / Sugiyama may pull out of the doubles, as Kim will have to play 264 matches in 2 days if it ever stops raining...by my estimation that would be a great boost to Martina and Sveta's chances of reaching the final :)

Third round score:

(4) Svetlana Kuznetsova / Martina Navratilova (RUS/USA) d. Henrieta Nagyova / Maja Matevzic (SVK/SLO) 62 63

A good solid win, and it's happened: Clijsters / Sugiyama withdrew, meaning the top half of the draw is now wide open. Hope they dont get overexcited too soon, as they're only in the quarters (Huber/Maleeva up next, and they're no pushover), but this is a great opportunity now...
