Manson's "The Golden Age of the Grotesque" moved 118,000 copies to land at #1 this week. While it's a #1 debut and slightly (about 1000 units more) better than what his last disc did, it's still the sixth-lowest figure for a #1 album this year, and the lowest of a debut #1. However, with sales figures being so sickly, I'm sure they'll take it. It's worth noting that this is their 2nd #1 album, after "Mechanical Animals" did it in 1998.

Anyway, the first single ("mOBSCENE") I don't think is all that good, much the way "Disposable Teens" didn't impress me from 2000's "Holy Wood". However, I'm damn near positive the 2nd single will be "Use Your Fist and Not Your Mouth", which is pretty sweet, but it's anybody's guess whether the first single will have tanked the record by then, much like three years ago when the infinitely superior "Fight Song" got zero airplay after the album disappeared during the Christmas season.

That is very weak. Only 1/2 of what Madonna did, and she got roasted for it. I agree Fight Song was incredible, not liking mObscene too much, myself.

Eh, he'll never, ever sell like Madonna. These are the first week numbers for his last 4 records (according to RollingStone).

AntiChrist SuperStar - 132,000
Mechanical Animals - 223,000
Holy Wood - 117,000
The Golden Age of the Grotesque - 118,000

I'm interested in knowing what it'll do next week. Holy wood fell off to about 73,000.

I'm guessing (and I don't really follow 2nd week drops every week) about a 50% drop or so. That seems to be the trend for a lot of artists. Big(ger) first week, then a rapid decent out of the top 50.

I think it really depends on whether there's a "Beautiful People" or a "Dope Show" on this CD. The hardcore fans provide the decent first week, but the casual, hit-driven music buyers would make it a hit record. But I don't expect that to happen.

Yep, that's what I was trying to say... you just did it better. Do you have it, the CD?

Uhhh, I haven't really gotten into the album yet. So it's hard for me to say just now. But I'm lukewarm on "mOBSCENE" too, and I like other songs, so yeah, probably. Get "This is the New Shit" or "Use your fist...."
try those out.

If the album is like the single, it will be his worst album so far. The single is awful. And in an interview I heard Manson say he's more commercial than ever, so that doesn't sound good

Oh well, he never really succeeded in maintaining the level of "AntiChrist Superstar" IMO. Holy Wood was okay and I didn't really care for Mechanical Animals. The live cd was brill though.

Agreed. Mobscene is an odd choice for a lead single, but I'm still looking forward to hearing the album.

i listened to the album in the shop, and it's quite a monster. the sound is tight and heavy.
that said, i think that MM is one of the artists where you just have to own one album and that's quite enough, thank you very much (in my case it's holy wood, i really like it, though my favourite single is still the dope show from mechanical animals).

Nothing beats The Beautiful People! One of the best songs ever.

Nah; can't beat the Fight Song, or Coma White. (well, unless you count the excellent version of Sweet Dreams)

I know a lot of people didn't care for mechanical animals, and I was one of them for about a year or two after the record came out. And then i just all of a sudden realized how great it is. It's my favorite CD of his, AntiChrist riding a close second.

So we're all in agreement that "mOBSCENE" sucks. happily, there are some good songs on there that don't sound like it.

This is the new shit indeed, it's his worst album... The song I like the most is "Better of two Evils", that reminds me of the wtaworld board: "haters, call me bitch, call me f..., call me whiney..." "mObscene" is fun, nothing more. The rest didn't catch my attention at all, except the KABOOM KABOOM, but it's bad really.

The only reason why the critics are overall positive is that Manson (finally) doesn't take himself seriously anymore and people in general are judging more his image than the music he does so...

Holy Wood is great, but there is 2 problems: there should have been only 10/12 songs in the album and the image/lyrics is the second problem... It's just Anti-Christ Superstar II, the ugly album cover, the lyrics constantly referring to the same topics (God, + the Colombine incident, blah blah). It's not shocking anymore, it's unoriginal, and annoying. But in term of music, it rocks, totally. Since I've listened to it once I can't stop to now. :bounce:

Mechanical animals is great, but I don't except the 16 years old enraged antisocial stupid typical Manson fan to buy that image, normal that he came back to his ugly image the album after. But that's another album that rocks.

So my ranking is:
1) Mechanical Animals
2) Holy Wood
3) Anti-Christ Superstar (a couple of good songs, but a lot of bad ones too)
4) Golden Age of Grotesque

I actually agree with most of that, except your TGAOG bashing, which I can't really comment on til i've listened to the entire thing.

Holy Wood did need to be pared down.

Antichrist has some waste on it, but I think the "couple good songs" are among his very very best.

"Beautiful People", "Tourniquet" and "The Reflecting God" are 3 of his best songs for sure.

Number one is very good if we consider that a lot of Manson listeners are the kind of people to download mp3. The album is available on kazaa since almost one month.

I expect the album to drop a lot next week.
