Since Amelie Mauresmo is not going to defend her points at Amelie Island this week, and with a gap of 600+ points ahead of Serena Williams, Maria will be #2 on the ranking as of 11 April 2005.

Not #1 yet, but still its a very good achievement with such a short period of time on the pro tour! Congrats, Maria! :worship:

How close will she be to #1? She probably doesn't have much to defend until Roland Garros, so if she has decent results, could she be #1?

Not possible any time soon. Lindsay is going to widen the gap. she is playing Amelia Island, and Family Circle Cup. Maria is not. By the end of FCC, Lindsay could be over 800+ points ahead of Maria. Don't know what lindsay's overseas clay court schedule is, though.

Where are all of Lindsay's points coming from? Last year's summer season?

Maria won Wimbledon and the year-end championships, made the QF at Roland Garros last year and the SF of the Australian this year, and she has several other titles including a Tier 1 event. She also has made the finals of 2-3 other Tier 1 events. It seems crazy that Davenport still has enough points to be way ahead of Maria.

It won't be long before Maria Sharapova is #1. Don't rush it because I suspect that she will stay perched there. I'm not sure about her Slam titles, though.

Champion points at Amelia and she lost pretty early to Patty Schyder at the FCC.

It's tough to say.

If Lindsay has a strong showing at both Amelie Island & Charleston, she will extend her lead at #1 on the ranking even more.

I've done a calculation to show what the possible ranking will look like for the four #1 position contenders at the start of RG:

#1 Maria Sharapova: Current Points 4,892 (Points off = 339) (Best 17 = 51) Total 4,604

#2 Lindsay Davenport: Current Points 5,233 (Points off = 704) (Best 17 = 72) Total 4,591

#3 Amelie Mauresmo: Current Points 4,992 (Points off = 1,385) (Best 17 = 137) Total 3,744

#4 Serena Williams: Current Points 4,227 (Points off = 517) (Best 17 = 0) Total 3,706

So, basically looks like it will depend on how Lindsay perform in the next 2 tournaments.

:)

Unstoppable Clijsters
Kim Clijsters (left) became the first woman in nine years to complete the Indian Wells-Miami double Saturday, overpowering No.2 seed Maria Sharapova in the final of the $3.115 million NASDAQ-100 Open. Unseeded Clijsters, playing just the third event of her latest comeback from a left wrist injury, upstaged Sharapova, 63 75, in doing so preventing the 17-year-old Russian from ascending to the world No.2 ranking.

Hello buddy. Before you replied please read carefully, I said the ranking as of 11 April 2005. Thank you. ;)

Hopefully Lindsay will do well in the next fortnight, and Maria will lose a bit earlier at Roland Garros this year - that way she won't get to #1 by June, and will only end up losing out on points at Wimbledon, even in the unlikely event that she defends Wimbledon. But hopefully she'll miss her chance. She needs to come down off her current pedestal, not get up on an even higher one. She's too young, and Yuri will ruin her at this rate.

Good for Maria. She deserves everything that's coming her way. She's been very consistent this year, not losing before ANY tournament SF.

Lindsay's Schedule is:

Amelia Island
Charleston
Roland Garros (I believe she's skipping Madrid this season)

Maria's Schedule is:
Berlin
Rome
Roland Garros

Maria's playing a more lucrative schedule points wise, but she is also playing the tournaments at which the Belgians and Mauresmo will be. Still, she will be the top seed at those events, so (with decent draws) she should make the SF of both events. Lindsay should defend AI easily, but I am less sure about her Charleston performance. I don't believe she'll win that tournament, nor do I expect her to gain many points. As Maria will be gaining (I expect) a lot of points over her two R16 performances at the European tier ones, I expect Maria Sharapova to reach the no. 1 ranking after Rome (maybe winning one of those two titles and then going on to win RG:angel: ).

What makes you suggest this? Maria has yet to defend her Wimbledon title and I believe if the rise of Kim and Venus and Justine continues she can forget about her defense of the 2005 Championships.

I respect your opinion but I can't believe so many posters are saying she's going to win RG!! I guess we will see soon enough!! #1 ranking is definitely not out of her reach however!!! But I'm hoping Kim (and Momo  ), Juju, etc will offer her great challenge !!! ;)
