I presume the newcomer award will be taken by Tatiana Golovin this year.
Maria is going to have some stiff competitions against Nastya and K-Lina.
But she'll be my pick for this award.

If she is not a newcomer, then Tatiana will get the award.
If she is not the most improved, then K-Lina will get the award.
Anyone knows which kind she is counted as?
Just the wimbledon champion I guess. They can't give her every award.

Oh, wait....most improved, that could be Nastya too, but K-Lina's rising in ranking mirrors Petrova who got the most improved last year, wow, hard decision:).

Didn't Maria officially turn pro sometime in 2002? If so, she would not be most impressive newcomer.
Do you have the WTA tour player award list last year?
I cant recall if she was named that last year or not? 'coz she should be.
Otherwise we'll have an intersting race for the most improved player of 2004.

Newcomer Awards usually given to someone new bursting into Top 100 for 1st time.

Golovin will win this award for 2004.
No comp.

look at the results. last year Sharapova made it to (correct me if im wrong) the 3rd round of Wimbly beating Dokic, now this year she won Wimbly... that's improvement to me~!

Well unless Tatiana Panova wins the US Open, it'll be Maria.
What if Myskina wins the US Open? 2 slams is quite an improvement over last year...

By the way, you just revealed my dark horse favorite. Go All In on Puffball Panova!
