CANBERRA, Australia (AP) -- Petra Mandula of Hungary beat Francesca Schiavone of Italy 6-1, 7-6 (4) in the first round of the Canberra Women's Classic on Monday.

Schiavone, ranked No. 31 in the world, was coming off victories over world No. 5 Kim Clijsters and No. 10 Monica Seles in the Hopman Cup last week.

Rachel McQuillan defeated former French Open champion and eighth-seeded Iva Majoli of Croatia 6-4, 6-2. Australian Amanda Grahame advanced when Barbara Rittner of Germany retired while trailing 7-5, 2-0.

Fifth-seeded Elena Likhovtseva of Russia overcame Selima Sfar of Tunisia 6-3, 6-2, and sixth-seeded Patty Schnyder of Switzerland beat Rossana De Los Rios of Paraguay 6-4, 6-4.

In other matches, American Jill Craybas rallied to beat Canadian Jana Nejedly 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, and Emilie Loit of France defeated Patricia Wartusch of Austria 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.
