Really, just look at that, France is current Europe and World champions in football. Australia is champion in rugby and cricket. Australia plays France in DC final for the second time in last three years. In Rugby World Cup final Australia beat France, Australia plays in each of last three DC finals. From good sports only in ice hockey Czech Republic is the current holder.

Canada doesn't seem to fare great in international competition lately, with a couple exceptions.
So i'm used to picking another country to root for, unless Canada shows up.

I change my mind every year too... In tennis for example, last year I was cheering for Spain (well...there is a good reason for that ). This year after Spain lost, I decided to root for Australia.

Next year, I'll likely change my mind back to spain untill they lose again, then have to pick someone else.

Anyhow.. congrats to Australians and French people...you must be very proud

US is impressive in Olympic sports ( athletics, swimming ) and in game sports that no other country in the world seems to be really interested and that have no or little internationsl exposure ( American Football, baseball, in lesser extent basketball ), but in true international game sports US sucks. US inability to be successful in soccer seems inexplicable even to me.

the Aussies can give the US a run for their money in swimming.

ys is right , when it comes down to Real events ,the US is so far off the mark.

Winter Olympics ? the Aussies don't know the meaning of Winter so how do they send a team ?

Well, you're view of the sports world must be pretty narrow if you can honestly make a statement like that. In the vast majority of sport, Australia and France are barely a factor. If you look at both the summer and winter Olympics, the U.S. and Russia are on top. But given France and Australia's relatively small populations, their accomplishments are rather impressive.

I think Russia's inability in soccer is even more inexplicable than the U.S.'s since, correct me if I'm wrong (which is certainly possible), soccer is the most popular sport in Russia and both are very large sports-oriented countries.

I am talking about sports that ARE popular. How many of those Olympic sports are even metnioned between the Olympics? I basically stopped being interested in T&F and swimming, because it became a biochemical lab contest.

Russian inability in soccer?

First, it is climate, any European country (except for Scandinavian countries ) can play the ball 10-11 monthes an year. In Russia it is 6 at best. Secondly, if we talk about European Championships, Russia has the third best record after Germany and France.

Considering how much money and people US has, I'm glad the other nations are catching up to us.
