And assuming Maria wants to stay fine, playing as much as possible is a terrible idea.
If she can stay healthy she can play a few events between the Slams. That should be enough for her to pick up some form.
Eventually that could lead into a few weeks when everything sort of comes together for her; her game, the draw, the surface.
Thanks for defining as much as possible. Of course how much possible is possible ( ) depends on her health.

However, picking only bigger tournaments like she used to won't cut either, especially when she's vulnerable solely for tennis reasons.

Mallorca was good choice, but just unfortunate draw. But she's not commitment player anymore, so she can play as much internationals as she wants. That's what I meant.

I see no point of playing Wimbledon, she will be out before 3rd round, she is no threat and she cannot do any damage on grass. She should focus on US hardcourts, she has some chance there.

She can't deal with Kerber's counterpunching if Kerber is in a good day. I fucking hate this matchup, I hate Kerber who can't miss nothing, I hate Maria for bottling h2h with her :hysteric:
My thoughts exactly. How is she getting beaten so soundly by Kerber (yea yea - I know, 2012 was long ago and Kerber is a bad matchup/in better form/better player right now), but ugh.

I hate that Martha has a negative H2H against her

As someone who hasn't really followed Maria's matches closely (especially pre-ban), what is it right now that's lacking from her game? She seemed pretty un-clutch today on important points and there were some big misses. Serve looks ok, movement.. I know that's possibly an issue for big hitters when they play Kerber - but I've always thought Maria moved pretty well for her height, or at the very least worked hard to improve it. Have her groundstrokes become less potent, does she lack confidence on them? Kerber loves a target and sadly Maria gave her plenty to work with today, and she seemed pretty comfortable with the pace

She's two matches in after a second shoulder surgery. Playing the reigning Wimbledon champ who played her best match of the season.

The serving was expectedly lacklustre, her movement takes time and matches to get going. She also hasn't been great on this surface in years even putting those factors aside. And she's barely been able to get match rhythm since last year's clay swing. Her serve speeds and energy getting up to it went way down mid-second set. As is to be expected given the circumstances. Concentration and clutchness need to be honed and practiced with matches too.

It's foolish to try judge her game overall or mentality etc from today. Or from Wimbledon in just over a week's time. She needs to strike a balance of getting matches without overplaying or getting hurt. Then we can better discuss what is lacking from her game etc.

Maria

I only saw the highlights.

Angie seemed to play very well. Her best stroke forehand longline was on fire. She loves grass.
I would not be surprised at all if she wins Wimbledon. Angie or Barty will win Wimbledon.

Maria still can hit stunning winners. But of course she is rusty, needs more matches.
I guess she made too many UEs and served bad. Otherwise this scoreline makes no sense.

Angie: 18 Winners, 5 UEs
Maria: 22 Winners, 31 UEs
Wayyy too many UEs from rusty Maria.

Funny how the Maria haters in GM completely ignore that Maria is just coming back from injury, is extremely rusty, played her last tournament in February
And that Maria played a very bad match - far from her best - and Angie a very good match.

We can only hope that Maria stays healthy now. Then she gets the matches she needs. And gain confidence again. Right now she is way too rusty.

Well in the end, Carebear has Maria's number for the moment, and there's nothing anyone can say to undo that. Maria has no one else to blame that she falls into this position.

Although yes, Angie's fans are acting as if Kerber has always been a better player than Maria will ever be. I'm unnecessarily annoyed

Has there been any presser quotes?
From what I can remember:

The lack of match play hurt her in the sense she couldn't convert any of the break points in the first set, and Kerber was much more solid on important points

She won't play a tournament before Wimbledon in order to continue shoulder rehabilitation

She's glad she played Mallorca because it put pressure on her arm(?) after months off tennis and her arm has held up pretty well which she's pleased with

Then I think she was asked about what her plans are for the Asian swing or something and whether she'll play it and she was just like at this stage of my career I can't plan that far ahead cause I don't know what condition I'll be in at that point.

At least she has some matches under her belt and hasn’t re-injured herself going into Wimbledon.
