Just noticed that the Orchestra does not have a thread for Makiri's ranking discussions. As this thread is started, she is at her all time high rankings in both singles #23 and doubles #21 and is sitting on the edge of cracking the top 20 in both categories. For fun, have started a poll on where everyone thinks Makiri will end 2006 in the singles rankings. In 2003 Makiri's year end ranking was #122, in 2004 it was #111, in 2005 it was #25, what are your thoughts for 2006?

The 6 February 2006 WTA rankings are out and Makiri stays at #23 in singles with 823.50 points, as we expected. She does move up nicely in the doubles rankings to #21 with 1318 points. Both are her all time best rankings! Congratulations to Makiri and her fans!!!

To show how close things are just ahead of Makiri, IF, IF, IF, IF she had beaten Hingis and gained those extra 60 points, Makiri would indeed be #20 in the world right now (2.5 points ahead of Dechy). Right in front of Makiri are:
#22 Groenefeld - 842 points (18.5 points ahead of Makiri)
#21 Jankovic - 856 (32.5)
#20 Dechy - 881 (57.5)
#19 Ivanovic - 930 (106.5)

This year Makiri is taking a two week break after the Toray PPO, last year she only took one week off. So she will lose some points before she takes the court again. This week last year Makiri was at Hyderadad and made the Semi's, and has 43 points to defend. As she is not playing, she will have those points roll off in the next ranking on 13 Feb. She should be 780.5 in the 13 Feb rankings. When she returns she will have another strong outing to defend. During the 3rd week in Feb 2005 she made the quarters in Doha. Is there a chance Makiri could slide back a ranking or two over the next two off weeks. Well #24 Golovin is at 758 points, and will have to have a net gain of points herself to move up. Makiri probably pretty safe to retain her #23 until she returns.

BTW, for the poll in my opinion Makiri will get to the top 20 but not move up to the top 15. In my opinion as Makiri moves up the competition will get more difficult and as she goes deeper into 2006 the points she will need to defend wil become greater (harder to gain net points). My opinion only, looking forward to seeing what everyone else thinks!

That's what I voted. Makiri is worthy of top 20, but right now I do not think she will break the top 15. It is just too difficult for her in her stage of playing. I could be wrong and i would love to see Makiri break the top 15.

Well, I agree with you guys, Top 20 is very realistic.
About Top 15 hmmm... I doubt but who knows. She didn`t perform well in Grand Slams last year so there`s a couple of net points to grab there. Actually the hole period between March and September (from Miami to US OPEN) will be very important as it was her "down time" last year...

Maria can easy be placed inside the Top 20 if she performs well at the last 3 GS's of the year. She has a bit to defend coming up at IW and her points from Hyderabad will drop off but if she maintains her form Maria is definitely a Top 20 player

Im thinking maybe 15 - 20 im not sure she is ready to be top 15 or 10 but she is definatly a top 20 player and will continue to improve. I expect my outlook will be bigger this time next year.

Well, I think she will finish this year as the #15. I don't think that she is able to enter the top 10, this could be a bit too early.

Well, as we are 4 months into 2006, Maria is at #22, up three ranking postions from the start of 2006. After blasting through the 60s and 50s in the Fall 2005 she has certainly shown she belongs in the low 20s. I remain convinced that Maria is a better tennis player than a handful of those ladies in front of her, and stand by my 15-19 end of year ranking hope. All the best to Maria for a strong clay court season!
