Magui Serna

I have seen her play only in a couple of matches but every time I see her, she's always impressive winning or losing.. She's got loads of talents but seems to have yet to live up to her potential. I mean she's got huge groundies off of both wings coupled with a big serve for her height. I think she's the Lisa Raymond kind of player. Only if she were more physically gifted. She's got power but not tall enough to make full use of what she's got just like Lisa.
What do you think?

I think she is what I would call a streaky player. She has runs of good and bad results. For example loosing to Amanda Janes was bad, Mandy may be one great prospect for the future, but losing to a player ranked outside the top 500 was bad.

But then she can challenge the top ranks of players.

as we Magüi’s fan say, Magüi is a box of surprises, when you go to a match, you never know if you’re gonna see the ‘good’ Magüi or the ‘bad’ Magüi. She’s capable of doing great things and bad things during the same match, but when the ‘good’ Magüi appears, she can beat many players (such as Chanda or Maggie twice (sorry ;) ) this year) and when the ‘bad’ appears, she can lose to much lower ranked players (I prefer not remembering the names ;)). But I think she is very talented and it’s great to see her play when she has a good day. A shame she isn’t taller, because she has a nice serve.

I think she's a more talented than Raymond, but them of course Raymond's doubles career is impressive and anyway being more talented doesn't mean that you'll fullfil it all.........
As junior in 1995 the Wimby final was Mauresmo - Serna, look to their carrers at this point, so equal and so different at the same time, since they both have nice results but don't finish to do the whole thing......
And Magüi's serve and groundstrokes are really impressive, her slice "backhand" (as she's lefty I don't know which one is each one  ) is great and when she hits it strong is really impressive, she should use it more often, plus, everyone talks about she being more fit, inside the courts she's one of the players I've seen that runs the most :)
Has she gained weight in the last couple of month?
I´ve seen her this week for the first time since the end of last season and I was shocked. Magui wasn´t the thinest player in the past, but now its a lot of overweight. Or makes the television that some players seem bigger?
As the others have said, I think she is very talented but lacks consistency. When she steps on court, as a fan, I never know what to expect; as we like to put it, if 'Magüi Serna, Wimbledon quarter finalist' turns up then she has a chance against almost anyone, however, if 'Mag-wi The Gremlin' appears she can lose to almost anyone. I've sat through her victory against Pierce at Wimbledon 2000 and her loss to Amanda Janes at Eastbourne qualifying this year amongst other matches - it's hard to believe she's the same player! She also appears to have difficulty in closing out tight matches against top players.

If she could find some consistency and lose some weight I'm sure she has the talent to be a ranked much higher than she is.

Actually, I think she's lost a little weight from last year.
As long as that great Magui showed up in beating Maggie, I really have no complaint. Maggie must of played ok but Magui was simply better on those days.. I like the way Magui hits her ground strokes. She can generate a lot of different spins. she looks like a magician when she's on. If only she were taller and more fit...that's a big shame.
She needs to lose weight and put less spin on her forehand. Other than that, she will do OK.
Should she lose weight like Dani has, then? Why can't players be different sizes, if their movement is not hampered? I think Magui is just a stocky sort; she is never going to have the build of a Venus or a Justine but that does not mean she is not fit. If she is healthy and strong, who cares about her stocky build.

agreed janie, she moves better than Lindsay, and is more athletic. What she needs is more consistancy.

I'll concede that! :D

I guess Magui is the Stocky Inconsistent Type. :)
I saw last night's match, and Serna did not look exactly fit to me. Obviously, she has a stocky body type, but her mobility was questionable, especially side to side. It looks as if she could get in better shape.
If this is the same gal that played Lindsay night. She was pathetic. She looked like a novice. She made me sick of watching her get routed. I turned the channel.

She played like she had two left feet and Please STOP posting threads about her. She's tired.

Sorry.
