Who was the lowest ranked player to win a tour level event-

1- Lowest ranking going into the event
2- Lowest ranking after tournament win
3- Lowest year end rank for the year of tournament win
4- Lowest career rank of a WTA title winner

I know Clijsters was unranked for her USO comeback win and i'm pretty sure Ying Ying Duan and Szofia Gubacszi both ended outside the top 80 in the years they won an event. Just curious to see these answers. Cheers!

Dulgheru was below top 200 when she won WTA Premier Warsaw in 2009 if I remember right.

I recall Yan Zi ended 2005, the year she won her 1st & only WTA title in Guangzhou, outside top 100. Probably not a record though.

Probably her friend Tian Tian Sun, winner in Tashkent one year later is one of the WTA tournament winners who reached a lowest CHR at #77

Shame Julia Cohen couldn't pull it off in Baku. She must be one of the lowest ranked WTA finalists ever, although Krejcikova is currently challenging her for that.

Apart from the unranked players, there was one year when Hantuchova (top 20 at that time) lost to that 1000+ ranked Canadian girl in Tier III Quebec :eek:h:

OP specifically said ranked player. An unranked player is not ranked.
Don't be facetious. The OP meant to include unranked players as part of lowest ranked. The fun of this thread is to see people from the depths of the tennis ranks somehow come through and win a title. Excluding unranked players would frustrate that purpose. After all, having no rank means you're lower than someone who has some rank. Otherwise you're splitting hairs in a way that you must know was not intended.

Evidence of this intention can be seen in the OP:

It begs the question why the OP would include this example if they specifically meant to exclude unranked players.
Calm down guys, the latter is correct in that i included unranked players, however i did initially state "ranked" players. Either as if, as for the topic- it seems

1-Angelique Widjaja #579 Bali 2001/Alexandra Dulheru #201 Warsaw 2009
2-Mirjana Lucic #? 1997 Bol/ ( Angelique Widjaja (#? 2001)
3-Zsofia Gubacsi #107 Casablanca 2001/Angelique Widjaja #147 2001
4- Tian Tian Sun #80 ( Tashkent 2006) / Marzia Grossi #79 ( 1993 San Marino)

**Marion Maruska deserves a nod- She made her only 2 tour finals ( and title win) in 1997 finishing at #55.....in nearly 10 years her best finish otherwise was #144!!

Marketa Vondrousova won Biel last year ranked 223rd entering the tournament and came through qualifying.

Margarita Gasparyan (I miss that gorgeous one-handed backhand so much) was ranked 112th when she won Baku in 2015. Had never won a Tour-level match before that week. Fun fact: she also won the doubles.

I never realized that Gasparyan had built her career to arrive to the threshold of the top 100 based only on ITF, without any victory in a WTA MD before Baku.

Justine won her first WTA event: Antwerp in 1999. According to the WTA website, she was ranked 178.

I looked this up on Wiki, and it turns out she was the fifth player to win her inaugural WTA tournament.
