I wonder how much the curent rules (90 second changeovers, etc) inflate match times. When I was watching a match from the 70s the other day the commentator mentioned how the changover rules for some events was 60 seconds-no wonder a lot of the older events never even used to have chairs to sit down in!

Remember the Challenge Round singles match at the 1893 Pacific Coast Championships in California, between Bee Hooper and Susie Morgan? Neither do I, but it was a very, very long match:

Bee Hooper d. Susie Morgan (holder) 9-7, 6-4, 3-6, 9-11, 7-5*

* 67 games in all.

There's long-and then extraordinarily long. I bet neither lady forgot this match!

"1898
*Atkinson d. Jones 6-3 5-7 6-4 2-6 7-5. US F. (51)"

Juliette Atkinson, the holder, saved five match points in the fifth set of that Challenge Round match to become US National Champion for the third time in four years, having been runner-up in 1896.

Hey that just indicates what a superb and underrated player Tegart was.
