Long Matches

Since the start of the game long matches have captured the imagination of the tennis public. Here we will post matches that are 40 games or more OR lasted a minimum of 3 hours in time.

Note: times are often approximate. Est=estimated time.

I've included mixed matches of more than 60 games.
*=mps saved by winner. See match points thread.

Lesley Turner Bowrey d Gail Sherriff Chanfreau 16 75 10-10 (retired) in the Final of the 1969 Western Open in Cincinnati. Does anyone have any information to this anti-climactic ending?

Linda Tuero d. Gwyn Thomas 4-6 6-1 6-2.

US National Women's Championship Rochester 1969.

No, I am not going bananas nor was the match stopped by bad weather or held up overnight but it took over 3 hours to complete. Here is a report from World Tennis:

Linda Tuero and Gwyn Thomas had one of the longest matches on record for a national final. The two girls were playing the title round of the National Women's Amateur Championships at Rochester. After Linda lost the first set 4-6, she decided to steady down, and she took the next two 6-1 6-2, but the match lasted more than three hours. Wrote Thomas Rogers in the New York Times: "Most points were contested endlessly from the baselines, and one point in the second set lasted about ten minutes. An exchange of 20 strokes was a rarity as the 29-year old Miss Thomas, who has not played tournament tennis for five years, concentrated on retrieving." Dick Savitt and several others were watching the match on TV. Finally one of the men got up, took a leisurely shower, came back and asked what the score was. The reply: "It's still the same point."

This match may have been long but it doesn't sound like it was too fun to watch. Here's a few quotes that struck my eye:

"She was lobbing and I was lobbing," Nelson-Dunbar said. "No matter what I did, she got all the balls back."

In the memorable tiebreak, they just kept hitting the ball back at each other for 1:47, punctuated by the 643-stroke point that seemed like it lasted an eternity.

Sounds like a snoozefest to me  I would have gotten up and headed for the bar :bolt:

Loved this quote:

"It was a little embarrassing, really," Nelson-Dunbar said Tuesday from her home in Medina, Ohio. "I apologized to the linesman when it was over."

Hello Preachefan:)

According to the the New york Times Chanfreau had to retire after collapsing with muscle spasms and stomach cramps. The final was in late July-so you can imagine the heat!
And I can imagine with two players who made their marks on clay that the rallies were incredibly long. The attack on Chanfreau's body must have come quite quickly since she stayed level with Bowrey until 10 all.

Roan: Obviously the match was less than entertaining; only a few spectators even lasted to the end  What's remarkable is that the match itself was played on a hard court, yet when they played at Roland Garros soonafter it was a quick affair. I also found it odd that this 6 hr + marathon was only two sets long (longer than the longest five setter?). What's NOT surprising was that it was a moonball-fest - how else could a single point last a half hour long? It almost sounds like a (female) 14s juniors match...I wouldn't expect that on the pro level in 1985, but regardless, it made the recordbook nonetheless.

Thanks folks-I added them in:) . Somewhere in the Blast I posted an article from the local Richmond newspaper on that infamous Nelson-Hepner match.

The Richmond tour stop had imploded from a decent event in 1979 (Navratilova and Wade headlined-30,000 plus came) to a disaster. I was told you could sneak in without even buying a ticket in 1983-a year when the highest attendence mark was about 1,500 and total attendance about 10,000

As a result in 1984 the event went down to minor league status. One reason the the Nelson-Hepner match was delayed so long was because they had to wait for two members to finish a match under the lights! Imagine that-they wern't about to kick off a couple of club members for a mere pro tennis match.

Needless to say that was the last year of pro tennis in Richmond.

The opening post says more than 40 games but I see that those of 40 have been included so I am assuming it is 40 or more.

Pity they couldn't kick Nelson and Hepner off the court before they indulged in the travesty that was their match.

[email protected] you Samn:lol:
The Richmond paper had a cartoon on a linesman asleep, and he had a cobweb from his nose to his outstretched hand.

Though one can only imagine the horror I'd like t have been among the few 9if not so proud) who saw the match. Then you have a T-shirt saying something like "I survived the longest tennis match".
