Davenport Withdraws From Sydney With Knee Injury
Lindsay Davenport By Richard Pagliaro
01/04/2002

Top-ranked Lindsay Davenport withdrew from the adidas International tournament in Sydney, Australia today leaving her status for the Australian
Open in doubt. Tennis Week has learned Davenport is still suffering from the bone bruise to her right knee she sustained during the November 3rd semifinals of the Sanex WTA Tour Championships in Munich, Germany.
The injury initially occurred earlier in the 2001 season and sidelined Davenport for 12 weeks. A recurrence of the injury forced the 25-year-old Californian to withdraw from the Sanex final against Serena Williams. Despite nearly eight weeks of rest and rehabilitation, the knee has not fully healed.

The Australian Open starts on January 14th. Davenport has not played a match since her dramatic 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) victory over Kim Clijsters at the year-end event. Her withdrawal from Sydney means she would enter the year's first Grand Slam in Melbourne with no match preparation should she be healthy enough to play.

"The injury Lindsay sustained to her knee during her semifinal match at the championships in Munich has not yet healed 100 percent," Tony Godsick, Davenport's agent at IMG, told Tennis Week today. "She continues to rehabilitate the knee and still hopes to be able to fly to Melbourne next week to try and participate in the Australian Open."

The 2000 Australian Open champion has reached the Australian Open semifinals for four consecutive years. Davenport was playing her best tennis of the year prior to her injury in November and earned the year-end No. 1 ranking for the second time in her career.

"This is one of the toughest days of my career," a disappointed Davenport said after the injury forced her to withdraw from the Sanex WTA Tour Championships. "I can't tell you how badly I feel. It's the worst possible way to end a season"

Oh no, this is terrible news! I wondered how Lindsay was doing and I am sorry to hear that she is still having problems. I hope that she will be able to make the Oz.

I hope she's HEALTHY enough to play OZ - if not, I'd rather she stayed home for her own sake.

Here's hoping this is precautionary.

What sad news.

I really hope Lindsay is well enough to play in Melbourne,

but if she's still injured, I hope she pulls out before the draw is made, and not after, so that Monica can be the #8 seed

Get better soon, Lindsay!

Its probably the best to withdraw if the injury is still there...

The bad news is that apparently this re-injury is worse than the original bone bruise she suffered in March that side-lined her for 2 months. Not to be pessimistic, but I would be surprised if she is completely healthy come time for Oz.

I think people (perhaps rightly) tried to play down the seriousness of the injury at the time.

Potentially, it was on the cards that it could see her sidelined for the very beginning of the year, since it was identical injury to what kept her out middle third of last year.

It's difficult to say how fully prepared Lindsay would need to be to go to Oz Open. I hope she goes, but obviously if she's not right she has to stay at home.

This sucks!

I hope ol' LD can get the injury situated so that she can make the trip to the Aussie.

Oh, no! I can't believe this, I was looking so forward to seeing Lindsay play again. She needs to be better for the Australian Open, even if she has no preparation, or I will be devastated. C'mon, Lindsay, heal up!
