Anna Kournikova vs Lindsay Davenport

(Vancouver, BC, Canada) - Game, Set and Match. Vancouver is set to host two of the most prominent names in professional tennis as 2003 US Open semi-finalist Lindsay Davenport and sports icon Anna Kournikova compete in The Power and Glamour of Professional Women's Tennis Challenge at the Vancouver Pacific Coliseum Friday, November 14, 2003. The official confirmation was announced today by event co-promoters Earl Barish, President, DreamWeaver Productions Ltd. and Hartley Miller, President, MackMatt Holdings Inc. Tickets will go on sale at Ticketmaster Friday, September 12th at 10:00AM
Tennis fans will be treated to approximately four hours of live tennis action and will experience the best female tennis players in the Province, Canada and the World. The full schedule of events will begin at 6:00PM by showcasing Canada's top female professional tennis players as Canada's # 1 player, Maureen Drake takes on fellow countrywomen, BC raised Sonya Jeyaseelan in a best 2 out of 3 match. Following the Drake Vs. Jeyaseelan match and in order to highlight the future of the Jr. tennis in the province there will be a match featuring BC's #1 ranked under 16 player Kristen Yoon VS. #1 ranked Under 18 player Stefi Gjine.
The main event will begin at 8:00PM and will feature a best of three-set match between Davenport and Kournikova. Following the Davenport vs Kournikova match tennis fans will be treated to a doubles challenge featuring Kournikova, Davenport, Drake and Jeyaseelan.
Lindsay Davenport (current world ranking #4, former # 1 ranked player in the world) is one of the most recognized names in the game of tennis. Fresh off her semi-final performance at the 2003 US Open, her outstanding career has included 36 tour victories including: Wimbledon, US Open, Australian Open and the 1996 Olympics. Major Awards and accomplishments include: Voted WTA Tour Player of the Month for February 2003 by International Tennis Writers' Association, o Re-elected to the WTA Tour Players' Council in 2002, o Voted the WTA Tour Player of the Month for October/November 2001, o Voted by journalists as winner of 2000 Prix Orange at Roland Garros as friendliest and most approachable player on Tour, o Named the United States Olympic Committee Female Athlete of the Month in July 1999 for her Wimbledon singles and doubles victories; recipient of the 1998 and 1999 WTA Tour Player of the Year and Diamond ACES awards, and the 1998 TENNIS Magazine Player of the Year award; 1998 ITF World Champion and Doubles World Champion with Natasha Zvereva, o World Team Tennis Most Valuable Player in 1997; 1997 International Tennis Federation Doubles World Champion with Jana Novotna, o 1996 ITF Doubles World Champion with Mary Joe Fernandez, o Named by TENNIS magazine and World Team Tennis as 1993 Rookie of the Year.
Anna Kournikova has become an entertainment icon. On the court she made an impressive showing at Wimbledon when she was only 16, becoming the second youngest women in the Open era to reach the semi-finals. Other career highlights include 16 WTA doubles tournament wins, most recently a victory at the 2002 Australian Open. Her off court accomplishments include playing a major role in a Enrique Iglesias music video and being recognized as the "most popular sports figure of 2002 as well as 2001", according to website searches by Lycos.com users. She also reached 58th on the Forbes Magazine Power 100 in Fame and Fortune 100.
"I'm really looking forward to participating in this event and to playing against Lindsay, who's a great competitor. I haven't had the chance to play in Vancouver before, so I am very excited to have this opportunity to visit and to play for the fans.
