adidas International attracts top field
Thursday, 22 November, 2001

SYDNEY, Nov 22 AAP - World No.1 Lindsay Davenport, Australian Open champion Jennifer Capriati and defending champion Martina Hingis were confirmed today as starters for next year's adidas International.
Tournament director Craig Watson today announced seven of the world's top 10 women had committed to the event, which will be the yardstick for subsequent Australian Open in Melbourne. Serena Williams (6), Belgians Kim Clijsters (5) and Justine Henin (7), and 2000 champion Amelie Mauresmo (9) have also entered the Jan 6-12 tournament, as has perennial crowd favourite Anna Kournikova.
Williams' older sister Venus elected to play at the 2002 Thalgo Australian Women's Hardcourts on the Gold Coast as her only preparation for the Australian Open.
The Sydney tournament is a higher rated tournament for women than men, which is why it has attracted such a strong field. Watson said the cut-off for the main draw for the women was 26 on the rankings.
French Davis Cup teammates Sebastien Grosjean and Arnaud Clement have entered the men's draw as has Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero and talented American Andy Roddick. Organisers remain hopeful defending champion, new world No.1 Lleyton Hewitt will return. The adidas International carries total prize money in excess of $1.7 million.
OH YES!GO LINDSAY!
