I feel like I’ve been copying and pasting this everywhere but here we go… :)

Dubai 1000 is mandatory for Leylah this year having skipped Doha 1000 last year and being ranked high enough for direct entry. The WTA Rulebook does not allow a player with direct entry to skip the same non-mandatory tourney (Dubai and Doha alternate 1000s) in consecutive years. Therefore, it was logistically sound for Leylah to do the entire 3-tournament Middle East swing then take a 1-week break (Monterrey week) before the Sunshine Double. One might ask then: she had early exits in all ME tourneys, why not take a WC into Monterrey? Because she presumably is doing Charleston after Miami then BJK qualifier in Vancouver. She would essentially be doing 8 tournaments back-to-back 8x which is just asking for trouble.

Holding out hope she opts for Bogota instead 🤞

Points of note from this interview:
  • embraces playing top players in early rounds (I'm happy she does bc it stresses us all out here. It's good to have some balance )
  • She gets a lot more requests from players to play doubles
  • Talks about playing doubles with Taylor started in Australia, plans on playing with her again in Miami
  • was asked about being in Break Point S2, but expertly evaded the question lol (also evaded the question about playing in BJK but I'd be surprised if she's not there)
  • Mike heard from someone in the know that she initially was supposed to have a more prominent role in Break Point S1 but that changed when she sustained her foot injury at RG (that actually would have been gold for entertainment purposes, but I guess she wasn't feeling up to it anymore bc it was such a blow emotionally)
  • talked about adding elements to her game. In general, she has a very positive, developmental mindset toward her tennis.

For BJK, it will be interesting if she enters Stuttgart/Istanbul
Maclean’s released a Power List ranking the 100 Canadians “shaping the country in 2023.” Leylah is #8 on the sports stars list.

It bothers me that there are non-Canadians on that list.

Something to celebrate for Leylah. She just got to the Miami doubles quarterfinals.
Fernandez-Townsend d. Haddad Maia-Olmos 6-4, 7-6 (7-4). They play Kichenok-Ostapenko next.
More to celebrate for Leylah.
Miami quarterfinals: Fernandez-Townsend d. Kichenok-Ostapenko (3) 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-8
They face an unseeded team in the semifinals.

Miami semifinals: Fernandez - Townsend d. Linette - Pera 1-6, 6-2, 14-12 on their fifth match point. They saved a match point. This is a great result for Leylah after a disappointing singles tournament.
They play Pegula and Gauff in the final.

Okay so Leylah has introduced a powder blue unicolor kit in Charleston. I can work with this one. I need better photos of her in it, something like this.

Tennis Shoe Tennis player Sports equipment Tennis Equipment

She needs to go deeper in the tournament and knock off some seeds to give the kit epic status.

As for the theme, I'm thinking Aqua Leylah. Like she just stepped out of the latest Avatar movie (or swam out, rather).

Any of you Leylah fans planning on going to Wimbledon this year and hopefully see her play?
I was gutted she missed last year.
I'm a newer fan and like a few different players.
I don't have a ticket as yet, but I reckon Leylah is likely to be on a random outside court. Just not the best courts straight away maybe..
