So last night I arrived in time to see the beginning of Kuznetsova/Zvonareva. Me and about 10 other people, and needless to say, I was incredibly disappointed. However as the match continued and Vera continued to look more and more teary, the crowds starting truly streaming in. They were almost all Serena fans, but what would I have expected. And I realized, once Serena's match started that there was a fairly sizeable crowd and it just kept getting bigger. As usual with LA tennis, I was at first put off by people's lack of knowledge: "Venus plays later on right?". However, I quickly forgot about all this because, as the match enetered as third set (which it by no means should have as Nastya self destructed at 6-4 3-0) people began getting truly into the match. And, I have to say, if you get a crowd that gives a standing ovation to a drop shot, it cannot be a bad crowd. This was my high point with the crowd. However, they ALL left before Lindsay's match. I blame this entirely on the tournament organizers. You cannot have a match that begins after 10:30 local time on a weeknight and expect many people to stick around...and remember, LA sports fans never stay for anything. Though I have to say they didn't miss much except for the 18,000 deuce game at 6-0 4-1. So please, don't blame the LA fans, when their girl is playing, they are as great as any other fans in the world.
