ZURICH, Switzerland (AP) -- Anna Kournikova was beaten in the first round for the fifth straight tournament, losing to Amanda Coetzer on Tuesday in her a yearlong struggle to overcome a foot injury.

Coetzer defeated the Russian star 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 at the $1.2 million Swisscom Challenge. Kournikova began the season ranked No. 8 but has dropped to No. 22.

Kournikova has been sidelined most of the season following a stress fracture of her left foot in February. This was only her ninth tournament this year.

Earlier, Meghann Shaughnessy was upset in the opening round, falling 6-3, 6-4 to Slovakian qualifier Daniela Hantuchova.

Shaughnessy was ousted in the first round for the second straight tournament. The sixth-seeded American won in Quebec last month for her first title of the year.

Lisa Raymond scored a 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory over Alexandra Stevenson, whose nine aces were offset by 10 double faults.

Kournikova had 25 double faults in her loss to qualifier Anne Kremer last week in Germany. She had trouble again with her serve against her South African opponent.

This was only the ninth tournament this year for Kournikova. A first comeback attempt ended after one singles match and four doubles matches.

Since her latest comeback in Leipzig, Germany, last month, she has lost all four of her matches.
