Kim was a sight to see on the court today at the Rogers AT&T Cup in Toronto. That was her first match and she's the prime catch of the tourney organizers. The stadium was packed in anticipation of the new #1.
Delivered, she did.
Her first two serves were smoking and the crowd erupted. I heard comments to the effect that she ain't no fluke. She filled her space with her corpulent body and demonstrated full control of her movement, her choices of shots and her deliveries. Schiavone, despite some spirited tennis at times, was awed and had no answer. At 5-0, I was imploring the Italian "Centuriona" to take a game and, thank God, she did. At that point, the crowd again erupted, which gives some credence to the theory that underdogs are often supported and cheered on by the public at large. The simple fact was that people wanted more of a drama.
Yes, everybody wanted a closer match but Kim wouldn't allow it. The Italian sliced and diced but finally succumbed 1-6, 2-6. Upon match point, Kim seemed to be just as fresh as she was at the beginning of the match, some 48 minutes earlier. Her demeanor was: "anybody else?"
Believe me, barring any upset, Kim is ready to take on any finalist.
